Solar Applied Materials Technology Corporation Donated to NCKU

With the management philosophy of investing in hometown and passing the opportunities to the next generation and in response to NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai’s governance spirit of recruiting international talents and solidifying research energy, Chairman Howard Chen of Solar Applied Materials Technology Corporation has donated NT$1,500,000 to National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, to establish Solar Lecture and to appoint Professor Emeritus Masahiro Yoshimura from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, as NCKU Visiting Professor.
The generous act of Chairman Howard Chen has made a new breakthrough in the national materials research field and the cultivation of material talents and also set an example of a successful enterprise giving back to its home school.
The ceremony of Solar Lecture is held at 10am, October 14th, in the Conference Hall of the Library, Cheng-Kung Campus, NCKU, where Chairman Howard Chen of Solar Applied Materials Technology Corporation has presented NT$1,500,000 to NCKU Senior Executive Vice-President Hwung-Hweng Hwung.
Professor Emeritus Masahiro Yoshimura from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, who is recruited as Visiting Professor at NCKU, is also present in the ceremony.
NCKU Senior Executive Vice-President Hwung-Hweng Hwung expressed, “We truly appreciate the generous donation from Chairman Howard Chen of Solar Applied Materials Technology Corporation. Money is like water. Water needs to flow to become running water. Similarly, money needs to flow to become alive. Because Chairman Chen has met President Lai through jogging and heard of the difficulty that NCKU Department of Materials Science and Engineering has in establishing Chair Professor, he has kindly made the donation.”
Senior Executive Vice-President Hwung-Hweng Hwung also mentioned, “This is an excellent deed of Chairman Chen. The establishment of a lecture is usually through academic channels, thus the act of Chairman Chen has set an example for others. To promote the exchange between academia and the industry, the method of donating funds for the establishment of a lecture will bring benefits to both the universities and the enterprises.”
Chairman Howard Chen of Solar Applied Materials Technology Corporation revealed, “When I heard that NCKU Department of Material Sciences and Engineering plans to recruit Prof. Masahiro Yoshimura as Visiting Professor and requires donation and participation of the industry, I quickly expressed my willingness to cooperate. We hope to have the opportunities to ask Prof. Yoshimura for his advice on the ceramic materials field, to give back to National Cheng Kung University to fulfill our social responsibilities and to inspire many enterprises to take part in the university education or joint research.”
Prof. Masahiro Yoshimura is currently the Professor Emeritus of Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, a Distinguished Visiting Professor of National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, and the next President of the Advisory Board of World Academy of Ceramics (WAC) from 2010 to 2014. He has done research in the Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, U.S., and the Laboratoire de Chimie Appliqee de l’Etat Solide C.E.C.M., France, and has received many awards such as 2006 Tokyo Metropolitan Academic Award, 2007 Research Award, Ministry of Education, Culture & Science, Japan and 2009 Lee Hsun Award, Institute of Metal Research, China.
