The 2010 Chinese Literature Summer Study Tour, organized by NCKU Department of Chinese Literature, welcomed 40 student representatives from Southern Fujian areas, who have arrived at the first stop of their tour, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, on October 13th.

During the seven-day literature tour, students from mainland China all look forward to experience the different cross-strait cultural aspects and understand the mysteries of Taiwanese literature.

NCKU Senior Executive Vice-President Da-Hsuan Feng, who has paid special attention to the promotion of Southern Fujian literature research at NCKU, has acknowledged the efforts of Director Yi-Yuan Chen of NCKU Department of Chinese Literature in opening a new route for Taiwanese students to travel to mainland China and to personally experience the literary sites.

He expressed, “In the last two years, National Cheng Kung University has put in great efforts to promote Southern Fujian Culture. Southern Fujian Culture has cross-disciplinary and transnational development, covering a broad area including Xiamen, Zhangzhou and Quanzhou. These cities have intimate contacts with Taiwan, culturally and geographically. The Chinese Literature Summer Study Tour is unique among the many cross-strait visit activities because it serves as a window for mutual acquaintance. This is also an important part of Southern Fujian Culture research. It also helps to increase cross-school and cross-ocean exchange opportunities, eliminate the cognitive differences of cross-strait cultures and promote mutual friendship.”

The 2010 Chinese Literature Summer Study Tour, commissioned by National Museum of Taiwan Literature and organized by NCKU Department of Chinese Literature, has sent sophomore students or above, master students and doctoral students from related departments of Taiwanese and Xiamen histories to Xiamen and Taiwan for visits and has also targeted major research themes of Chinese literature and Taiwanese literature to organize lectures and seminars, hoping to achieve the academic goal of getting to the bottom of matters and increase the knowledge and understanding of Xiamen and Taiwanese students on cross-strait culture and lives.

The literature tour of Taiwanese students visiting Xiamen from September 3rd to September 9th has concluded successfully. The team, consisting of 40 student representatives from 13 universities, led by Director Yi-Yuan Chen of NCKU Department of Chinese Literature, has visited sister universities of NCKU, including Xiamen University, Zhangzhou Normal University, Huaqiao University, Quanzhou Normal University, Lin Yu Tang Literature Museum, Lin Yu Tang Memorial Museum, Lu Xun Memorial Hall, and China Museum for Fujian-Taiwan Kinship, initiating the exchange between cross-strait higher education and cultures.

The participated students came from Taiwan Normal University, Taipei University of Education, National Taipei University, Changhua Normal University, National Cheng Kung University, National Pingtung University of Education, National Central University, Hsuan Chuang University, Zhongshan University, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, National University of Tainan, National Chung Hsing University, and National Kaohsiung Normal University.

After the students in Taiwan have completed their journey to mainland China, 40 students from Xiamen University, Zhangzhou Normal University, Huaqiao University, and Quanzhou Normal University in mainland China have arrived at NCKU on October 13th and will stay in Taiwan still the 19th.

NCKU Dean Chiun-Hsiung Lai of College of Liberal Arts, who has welcomed the students from mainland China on behalf of National Cheng Kung University on the first day of their arrival, expressed, “It is enviable that students can personally visit the literature sites to experience the connections between literature sites and written texts. Literature is not merely knowledge. It has vitality. I hope as they return to their hometown, the students can bring back many precious memories.”
