Tainan, Taiwan, October 12th, 2010
A bookmark exhibition has begun at the Library, Cheng-Kung Campus, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, on October 12th, displaying the collection of Prof. Kun-Yan Huang, the founding Dean of NCKU College of Medicine.
NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, Dean of College of Medicine Chyi-Her Lin and dozens of teachers and students have attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition.
Even though Prof. Kun-Yan Huang could not attend the ceremony due to foot injury, he has personally written comments on each bookmark, sharing the stories of bookmarks, books, reading and life and thus attracting many teachers, students and citizens to observe and enjoy.
The bookmark exhibition is only displaying partial collection of Prof. Kun-Yan Huang, who has donated more than 200 bookmarks that he collected in more than 20 years to NCKU, and the College of Medicine will make use of the collection in the future to pass down the humanistic spirit of Prof. Huang.
NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai has praised Prof. Kun-Yan Huang to be the representative of the best tradition at NCKU College of Medicine, valuing both expertise and humanities, “The most important feature of humanism is the attitude between people. Prof. Kun-Yan Huang has always emphasized on the importance of being a good doctor instead of a famous doctor. He has also stressed on the importance of taste and humanistic accomplishment. Prof. Kun-Yan Huang is undeniably the model of the highest humanistic accomplishment. He loves to read and in the process of reading he has collected many bookmarks.”
President Lai also mentioned, “Through the bookmark exhibition, we not only realized that Prof. Huang has read many books, but we also witnessed the transformation of the essence of the books into personal taste and accomplishment, the illustration of true humanistic spirit. I hope the bookmark exhibition can inspire the taste and humanistic accomplishment of everyone at NCKU. This is one of the most important goals of the bookmark exhibition of Prof. Kun-Yan Huang.”
NCKU Dean of College of Medicine Chyi-Her Lin expressed, “We truly appreciate Prof. Huang for donating articles which he has collected over 20 years in Taiwan. Bookmark is just one of them. Prof. Huang has always been promoting the habit of reading. Bookmark is the article which connects books with people. The bookmark exhibition, which unveils the humanistic spirit of Prof. Huang, truly deserves the attention of the viewers.”
NCKU College of Medicine and Department of Medicine Alumni Association have specially prepared calligraphic leather bookmarks, each for a prize of NT$200, for a limited edition of 1,100, and the money will be given to Kun-Yan Huang Medical Humanities Lecture Educational Fund to promote medical humanistic education.
The first 100 students who hold their student cards to enter the exhibition and to leave comments on the guestbook can each receive a calligraphic leather bookmark by Prof. Kun-Yan Huang, thus many students from the College of Medicine have lined up early.
Prof. Kun-Yan Huang is a humanist of the medical field. He loves to read a wide range of books. At first, he used to make marks on the unfinished page. However, 20 years ago, when he discovered a triangle and golden bookmark, it triggered his idea of collecting bookmarks.
After more than 20 years, the bookmarks collected by Prof. Kun-Yan Huang during business trips, family trips or official visits have transmitted the local customs, histories, cultures and literatures of different countries.
As his bookmark collection becomes more and more abundant, the bookmark exhibition of Prof. Kun-Yan Huang first deputed at NCKU Library in November, 1998, and has been displayed in the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, Asia University, Tainan National University of the Arts and National Tsing Hua University.
Eleven years after the first bookmark exhibition, the bookmark exhibition this year has broadened its scale, covering 5 continents and 16 countries, and the materials included traditional paper, leather, cloth, wood, metal and Egyptian papyrus.
With the 79th Anniversary of National Cheng Kung University approaching, Prof. Kun-Yan Huang, the founding Dean of NCKU College of Medicine, has selected 106 bookmarks from his collection for display in the NCKU Library from October 12th to November 15th, hoping to attract teachers and students to share the delight and observe the aesthetics of bookmarks.
