Doctoral student Hans I-Chen Harn of the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, is the only Taiwanese student representing Taiwan who has participated in the Novartis BioCamp International and received great attention in the competition.
Even though Hans I-Chen Harn did not receive the best award in the competition, he has successfully applied his advantages of eloquence, confidence and enthusiasm, thus pushing himself to the next level and promoting the beauty of Taiwan to the world.
Hans I-Chen Harn has represented Taiwan to participate in the Novartis BioCamp International, organized by Novartis AG, Switzerland, an internationally renowned enterprise and one of the world’s third largest pharmaceutical company, and has brought his cross-disciplinary knowledge and unique charm into full play, receiving high praise from the Head of Corporate Leadership Development Jeanette Swan at Novartis.
NCKU Vice-President for Academic Affairs Ming-Jer Tang, the advising professor of Hans I-Chen Harn, has congratulated him on his outstanding performance, “Hans I-Chen Harn is a unique student of mine. He is active and enthusiastic and loves to help others, always bringing excellent research atmosphere to the laboratory. I’m very proud of him.”
Vice-President Ming-Jer Tang also pointed out, “Students in Taiwan lack the opportunities to express their ideas and thinking. We should encourage students to step out of their space and seek opportunities in the outside world to express themselves. Novartis BioCamp International is a well-known and a typical competition of the biomedical field. The participants are the best of each field. Since its establishment for 7 years, Hans I-Chen Harn is the first elected contestant representing Taiwan at NCKU. Because the final round of the competition is held at the Headquarter of Novartis, Basel, Switzerland, the scale of the competition this year is the largest ever.”
BioCamp was initiated in 2004 by Novartis Taiwan, directed by Science & Technology Advisory Group (STAG), Executive Yuan, and co-organized with Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries Program Office (BPIPO), Ministry of Economic Affairs.
The initial goal of Novartis Taiwan BioCamp is to support Taiwan’s future leaders to experience the impact of global business environment to sharpen their leadership capability for global business. Today, BioCamp has expanded from a Taiwan local initiative to a global event. Countries such as Switzerland, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and Thailand are active in the annual event. The Novartis Headquarter has officially recognized BioCamp as Novartis global program.
In order to be eligible for the final round of the competition, the participants in the Novartis BioCamp International had to become regional representatives first. Hans I-Chen Harn has emerged from more than 100 elites from the fields of medicine, biotechnology, business, finance and management, in Taiwan, passed written examination and interview, become one of the 37 contestants, including 9 doctoral students, 24 master students and 4 bachelor students, to make a biomedical industrial proposal, and been elected as one of the two students to represent Taiwan to participate in the international competition.
In the first round of the competition, student Hans I-Chen Harn has designed nano robots, the savior of thrombus, which can receive instructions in blood vessels, by integrating the mechanical expertise of the NCKU Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics with his own expertise of medicine and thus reaching the goal of removing brain clots.
With his bold and innovative creativity, Hans I-Chen Harn and Charlene Ng, a foreign student from Malaysia, from School Of Medicine at Taipei Medical University have represented Taiwan to participate in the Novartis BioCamp International held at Basel, Switzerland, from August 30th to September 1st, 2010.
The 2010 Novartis BioCamp International has accepted 60 representatives from 24 countries. Among them, 20 representatives were elected directly by the Novartis Headquarter in Switzerland and 40 representatives were elected by the branches in different countries.
The Novartis Headquarter has provided opportunities for contestants to engage in direct contact with the top management personnel, including the winner of the first BioCamp Eddy Wu, Rino Rappulo who is known for his work in vaccines and immunology and the Head of the Novartis Pharmaceuticals Division Joseph Jimenez, as well as a series of lectures and laboratory visits to allow contestants to have a deeper understanding of the operation of world-class apothecaries.
Making effective use of every learning opportunity, Hans I-Chen Harn was the first person to raise question in the discussion time after lecture and one of the most enthusiastic speakers in every event, leaving deep impression on the minds of the lecturers and Jeanette Swan, the Head of Corporate Leadership Development Jeanette Swan at Novartis and also the sponsor of BioCamp International.
During the 3-day competition, the 60 contestants were organized into 8 groups, each having different nationalities and different expertise. They were required to create a new medical technology and design a proposal which covered the research and development of technologies, crisis management, market analysis and financial planning. The best team and three outstanding individual awards were revealed in the final competition. Though I-Chen Has did not receive the biggest award, one of the presenters from his team has won the outstanding individual award.
Hans I-Chen Harn expressed, “It is important to find one’s specialties and make full use of his or her advantages. The participants were the best of the best, having different cultural backgrounds and leadership styles. At first, everyone had different opinions. However, after the first day, I have discovered that it is important to reach a consensus to progress forward as a team. By integrating and coordinating the responsibilities of each member, everyone had a clear understanding of our common goal and thus the working efficiency of the team has increased significantly.”
Hans I-Chen Harn also believed, “Only cross-disciplinary learning can elevate one’s competitiveness. In the future, many talents may treat expertise as the basis. It is personal abilities, other than expertise, which make a person shine. This replies on cross-disciplinary learning. Cross-disciplinary learning not only increases expertise, but more importantly, it enhances the understanding of different fields and helps to broaden individual perspective.”
