To understand the benefits of exercise in elevating health quotient, emotional quotient and intelligence quotient, the Institute of Physical Education, Health and Leisure Studies at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, has invited Dr. John Ratey from Harvard Medical School, U.S., to give a speech of how exercise transforms brain and share the concept of exercise and health with more than three hundred teachers and students on October 7th.

At 6:30am, prior to giving his speech, Dr. John Ratey has participated in the morning run with NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai and more than 50 teachers and students for 1,000 meters and also in the morning exercise at NCKU Banyan Garden.

NCKU President Lai expressed, “I hope the visit of Dr. John Ratey, who came all the way from Harvard University, U.S., can stimulate the general mood of exercise in the campus, because regular exercise contributes to healthy body and healthy body contributes to better learning ability, working efficiency and pleasant feeling.”

Dr. John Ratey pointed out in his lecture, “Exercise not only affects our body in a positive manner, but it also affects the brain, coming from the fact that ten thousand years ago, we were hunter-gatherers. At that point in time, human beings were happy to move about 10 to 14 miles per day on average. Early humans survived because they had the ability to perform demanding physical work. Those who did not run did not eat. Individuals who could out-run and out-plan their peers would survive.”

Dr. John Ratey revealed, “As culture changed and evolved, we are sitting in front of computers and computer screens a lot. According to the statistic done last year, it was estimated in United States each adult on average spends 9 and a half hour per day in front of computers. This is a very serious problem for students in United States, Taiwan and also the world. My recommendation is to motivate children to move again because we know exercise improves brain function.”

Dr. John Ratey suggested, “One should exercise at least three to four times every week and reach sweating effect to maintain health. Exercises that most people enjoy, including strolling, running and cycling, are repetitive and unbalanced. To improve brain function, people need to engage in exercises that have complex movements, such as aerobic dance, to stimulate brain function and elevate health quotient, emotional quotient and intelligence quotient.”

Dr. John Ratey emphasized, “To strengthen brain function, exercises such as aerobic dance can simultaneously train memory and trigger brain development. In addition to improve learning efficiency, reduce pressure and delay aging, regular exercise can improve emotional control and make human brains smarter.”

Dr. John J. Ratey, a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, U.S., has lectured and published 60 peer reviewed articles on the topics of Aggression, Autism, ADHD, and other issues in neuropsychiatry.

American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and American Medical Association (AMA) have promoted Exercise is Medicine in 2007, and United States Department of Health and Human Services has also raised National Physical Activity Plan in 2010, asking different fields, including industry, transportation, media and school, nationwide to promote the project of elevating national physical ability.
