NCKU Distinguished Prof. Hua-Lin Wu and Chair Prof. Lien-Wen Chen Won Academic Award of Ministry of Education

Distinguished Prof. Hua-Lin Wu of Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Chair Prof. Lien-Wen Chen of Department of Mechanical Engineering at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, have won Academic Award of Ministry of Education, Taiwan, with their outstanding academic achievements and contributions to the field of biology and medical agricultural science and the field of engineering and applied science.
NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai will commend the outstanding performance of the two professors in the school assembly on October 27th, and the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, will present a certificate and a grant of NT$600,000 to each of the winners of Academic Award of Ministry of Education in an awarding ceremony in December.
In order to encourage academic research and enhance academic qualities, the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, has established the Academic Award, which is granted to the persons who have actively engaged in academic research in the country, have made important contributions or achieved great accomplishments and have been recognized by the academia.
The Academic Award is granted annually with the total number of the Awards not exceeding a maximum of thirteen each year, with a quota of two recipients for each of the sections of “Liberal Arts” and “Social Science”, and three for each in the rest of sections.
The Academic Award of Ministry of Education has selected nine recipients this year. National Cheng Kung University has occupied two seats, only second to that of National Taiwan University.
NCKU Distinguished Prof. Hua-Lin Wu, the Deputy Director of NCKU University Center for Bioscience and Biotechnology and the Director of NCKU Cardiovascular Research Center, specializes in the research of proteins, enzymes and vascular biology and has accumulated various outstanding achievements and contributions, especially on Thrombolytic drugs and streptokinase.
Distinguished Prof. Hua-Lin Wu has received Excellence Award of National Science Council, Wu San-Lien Award for Distinguished Achievement in Medicine, and K. T. Li Honorary Scholar Award. In addition to research and teaching, he has devoted himself into the study of cardiovascular biology and established Taiwan Society for Vascular Biology.
Distinguished Prof. Hua-Lin Wu has been invited to attend the 16th Scientific Meeting of International Society for Vascular Biology from June 20th to 24th, 2010, and has acted as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board.
Chair Prof. Lien-Wen Chen, the other recipient of the Academic Award of Ministry of Education at NCKU, specializes in the areas of plates and shells, mechanics of composite materials, and structure dynamics. His fruitful research achievements of composite structures, smart materials and dynamics can be applied on rotary machineries such as turbines, compressors and aircraft engines.
The research achievements of Chair Prof. Lien-Wen Chen have been published in international journals. He has 158 papers accepted for publication and 4 inventions that have received R.O.C. patents. In addition, because of his outstanding research achievement on composite structure, Chair Prof. Lien-Wen Chen has been invited to assume the position of editor board of Composite Structures.
Chair Prof. Lien-Wen Chen has been awarded Excellent Research Award, Outstanding Research Award and Research Fellow of National Science Council, and Outstanding Engineering Professor Award of Chinese Institute of Engineers and Fellow of Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineers.
