Representatives from Chinese Academy of Sciences and Prof. Masahiro Yoshimura from Japan visited NCKU President Lai

Representatives from Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the national academy for the natural sciences of the People's Republic of China, accompanied by Section Chief Mei-Chih Wu of Academia Sinica, Taiwan, and NCKU Vice-President for International Affairs Jenny Su, have visited NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai for a brief meeting, expecting to cooperate in the future.

In addition, Professor Emeritus Masahiro Yoshimura from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, accompanied by Prof. Jiunn-Der Liao of the NCKU Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has visited NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, sharing his experience and achievements during his stay at NCKU.

During the visit of Chinese Academy of Sciences delegation, Vice-President Jing-Hai Li of Chinese Academy of Sciences has inquired President Lai of his research insights and achievements on Avian Influenza and Infectious diseases.

President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai has also introduced the characteristics of NCKU, including the integration of colleges in a single campus which makes cooperation easier for talents from different fields and triggers cross-disciplinary research achievements, as well as the advantages of NCKU, especially on industry-academia cooperation.

Vice-President Jing-Hai Li has also asked about the number of students and schooling conditions at NCKU. President Lai revealed that exchange students from mainland China and students in Taiwan can influence each other. Students from China feel that Taiwanese students have the freedom of learning and students at NCKU feel that students from China have more eager learning attitude.

NCKU is also currently actively striving for the approval of the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, to go to mainland China to recruit students, hoping to attract students from mainland China.

Both parties agreed that in the global competitive environment, through the exchange of students from mainland China and Taiwan, better innovative ideas will be sparked and higher academic achievements will be achieved.

They have also reached an agreement that in the future, the cooperation between Chinese Academy of Sciences and National Cheng Kung University can begin with the cooperation of teachers and professors and the organization of academic conference to promote joint research.

Later in the day, Professor Emeritus Dr. Masahiro Yoshimura, who was recruited as Visiting Professor at NCKU since January, 2010, from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, has also met NCKU President Lai.

Prof. Masahiro Yoshimura has shared his experience and achievements at NCKU and expressed his hope for a longer duration of employment at NCKU to continue to apply his knowledge and skills of ceramics to the field of biomedicine and materials, spend more time with teachers and students at different occasions, trigger new thinking and ideas, and contribute to the academia.

Prof. Masahiro Yoshimura, who is elected as the next President of the Advisory Board of World Academy of Ceramics (WAC), praised Prof. Jow-Lay Huang of NCKU Department of Materials Science and Engineering, who was elected as the Academician of the World Academy of Ceramics, to be the first and only professor elected in Taiwan among the 14 scholars elected as academicians from United States, Japan, Germany, China, Korea, etc.

Prof. Masahiro Yoshimura, born in 1942 at Tokyo, Japan, is currently the Professor Emeritus of Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, and a Distinguished Visiting Professor of National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan. He has done research in the Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, U.S., and the Laboratoire de Chimie Appliqee de l’Etat Solide C.E.C.M., France, and has received many awards such as 2006 Tokyo Metropolitan Academic Award, 2007 Research Award, Ministry of Education, Culture & Science, Japan and 2009 Lee Hsun Award, Institute of Metal Research, China.

Prof. Yoshimura is internationally active as well. He was the former President of International Solvothermal and Hydrothermal Association (ISHA), Vice-President of the World Academy of Ceramics, as well as Member of the International Institute of Science of Sintering, Serbia, having published 680 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 3 books and 30 patents, etc.
