Tainan, Taiwan, September 29th, 2010
Master student Yi-Ting Yang and doctoral student Kang-Ming Lu from the Department of Architecture, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, have participated in “Alishan 100 Years” student competition, competed with more than 300 contestants and 105 works and won the first prize with the concept of energy saving and carbon reduction of their work entitled “Log100 (Co2) Forestry Memorial Park.”
By giving new life to Alishan, the two students will receive a grant of NT$1,000,000 and a medal in an awarding ceremony to be held on October 18th in Forestry Bureau, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan, in Taipei. In addition, students who won second place will receive NT$250,000 and students who won third place will receive NT$150,000.
In their work, students Yi-Ting Yang and Kang-Ming Lu have created three mechanisms of photosynthetic carbon fixation, including tree planting plaque, carbon transaction monument and outdoor performance stage, corresponding to the world concept of energy saving and carbon reduction, allowing pedestrians to experience the past, present and future of the century-old forestry and motivating citizens to join the team of environmental protection.
The design idea of Yi-Ting Yang and Kang-Ming Lu has integrated the 100 years of history of the forestry and the latest development of international sustainable development issues, including environmental sustainable development and energy saving and carbon reduction, allowing the mass to understand the history of the century-old forestry and providing the stage for Forestry Bureau to promote “Green Forestation Project” and encourage sustainable forest policy.
Since its exploitation in 1912, Alishan will mark its 100th anniversary next year. To show the historical significance of the 100 years of forestry development, the Forestry Bureau, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan, has organized the “Alishan 100 Years” student competition, hoping to build the most memorable landmark of the Alishan forestry and leave historical evidence of the 100-year of management of Alishan forestry.
The final round of the competition was held on September 24th in Sin-Min Campus, National Chiayi University, and more than 10 professional judges from the industry, academia and government in Taiwan chose students Yi-Ting Yang and Kang-Ming Lu from NCKU Department of Architecture as the winners of the competition.
Student Yi-Ting Yang from Department of Architecture at National Cheng Kung University revealed, “From the local police station of Alishan to the Forestry Memorial Park, you’ll first see wood pillars on Asahi Plaza, then as you continue to walk on the red trail, you’ll see harvesters and carbon transaction monument from different angles and also an outdoor performance stage from a high point. The stage can be used for signing ceremonies and also other activities. If you keep on walking along the red trail, you’ll connect to an old trail of Alishan. Thus the “Log100 (Co2) Forestry Memorial Park” and Alishan are merged as one.”
