The “Used Book Sale for Charity” of National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan, began from 10am to 5pm everyday from September 27th till October 1st at the entrance hall of NCKU Library, Cheng-Kung Campus, and attracted dozens of students, hoping to find new homes for the used books, help to protect the environment and offer aid to the disadvantaged children and families.

NCKU Library Director Wen-Jen Hsieh expressed, “’The ‘Used Book Sale for Charity’ is an event of significance, caring and love. With everyone’s effort, we have 152 participants who have donated more than 4,400 books this year. When those who love to read donate their books and those who love to read buy them, we find new homes for the used books. Also, through the recycling of used books, I believe it is helpful to environmental protection.”

Director Liu of Taiwan Fund for Children and Families Tainan City Branch Office mentioned, “This year is the 60th anniversary of Taiwan Fund for Children and Families. I truly appreciate the encouragement and help of our friends from every industry. The colleagues from NCKU Library and the volunteers from Tainan City Branch Office, as well as more than 100 donors and buyers, have all contributed to the event today. I believe in the future, NCKU Library and the Tainan City Branch Office will have countless opportunities for cooperation. We will cherish the money and use it wisely on disadvantaged children and families so they can carry on a successful life.”

The price of the used books ranges from NT$10 to as high as NT$600. The used books with the highest price are mostly original textbooks and those of high-technology. The used magazines are mostly $30 each and the used magazines for language learning are $50 each. The total sale amount of 2010 “Used Book Sale for Charity” till 12:30pm, September 27th, is 372 books and NT$29,510.

Since 2004, NCKU Library has collected nearly 13,000 volumes of books, raised over NT$740,000 and donated the money to public interest groups, including Tainan Branch of the Genesis Social Welfare Foundation, Taiwan Fund for Children and Families Tainan City Office Branch, St. Raphael Opportunity Center and Tainan Country Care and Concern Association on Intellectual Disability.
