The groundbreaking ceremony of the new buildings of Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Department of Resources Engineering and Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering in Cheng-Kung Campus at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, was held on September 24th, 2010, symbolizing the expansion and development of NCKU College of Engineering.

NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, Secretary General Woei-Shyan Lee, Dean of College of Engineering Pao-Shan Yu, Dean of College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Yon-Hua Tzeng and dozens of teachers and students have attended the ceremony.

NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai expressed, “It is a historical moment. It is probably the first time in the history of NCKU that the construction of three new buildings takes place at the same time. Since the establishment of NCKU College of Engineering in 1931, the performance of the college has been very outstanding in nearly 80 years. Even though the College of Engineering has been divided into the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the College of Planning and Design, it still has the posture of an excellent college.”

President Lai also mentioned, “The construction of the three new buildings has significant meanings. First of all, they are located in the oldest campus of National Cheng Kung University. It is where the old College of Engineering building was situated. Many alumni are deeply attached to this place. Though many alumni have said to me that the old building has disappeared, it is not destruction of the tradition. It is the establishment of better environment and equipments on the basis of previous efforts. In other words, this is inheritance rather than destruction.”

President Lai further explained, “The second significant meaning is that the three new buildings do not belong to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Department of Resources Engineering or Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering. They belong to the entire teaching and research staff at National Cheng Kung University. All teachers and students can engage in related research here and learn from each other. It is definitely the space for everyone.”

In the past few years, the buildings of Department of Environmental Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, and Department of Engineering Science have undergone reconstruction in accordance with the blueprints, but Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Department of Resources Engineering and Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering remained to be renovated.

Expecting an overall consistent campus planning, NCKU Campus Planning and Development Committee decided to renovate the three department buildings to finalize the process of reconstruction. The construction of the new buildings costs NT$1,088,200,000 and expects to finish by September 10th, 2012.

After the completion of the construction, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Department of Resources Engineering and Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering will each have the most modern and advanced teaching and research space to help elevate the teaching quality and research achievements of the teachers and students.
