NCKU International Students Celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival
Tainan, Taiwan, September 21st, 2010
To allow international students to participate in a Chinese traditional festival and personally experience its customs and culture, Chinese Language Center at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, has prepared 40 pomelos, 200 moon cakes and rabbit ear props for dozens of international students to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival.
Thomas Weissl from Austria expressed, “This is my first time to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival. The moon cakes were delicious and it was interesting to personally try to peel off the pomelos. We don’t have similar festivals in Austria, so I’m extremely happy that NCKU Chinese Language Center has organized an event for international students to experience the joy of celebrating festival overseas.”
Monica Clements from Australia said, “There’re many Chinese people living in Australia, so we will celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival together. The first time I celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival was in China. I like the sweet and sour taste of pomelos and the joyful atmosphere of everybody gathering together to celebrate the festival.”
Philippe Morgan from France also mentioned, “Although I’m not used to the taste of moon cakes, I like the feeling of everyone gathering together to celebrate the festival. When I was studying in United States, I used to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival with my classmates from China. However, this is my first time to make pomelo hat and wear rabbit ear props. This year, my Taiwanese friend’s parents have invited me to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival with them, and I’m looking forward to the activity of barbeque.”
With two students as a team, the first person had to wear rabbit ear props and peel off a pomelo to make a pomelo hat for the second person to wear. The second person had to wear the pomelo hat and read the phrase on a card with the first person to pass the second point. Then the team had to each finish eating one moon cake as fast as they could and take a picture to commemorate the moment.
The three teams who passed the three points in the shortest period of time would receive pineapple cakes and the remaining teams would receive photos taken during the event.
NCKU Chinese Language Center revealed, “The event is organized to allow international students to have the opportunity to taste pomelos and moon cakes. By making pomelo hats and wearing rabbit ear props, we hope the event can inspire their interest in Chinese traditional festival and bring the joy of Mid-Autumn Festival.”
