The 2010 NCKU Freshmen Orientation Camp was held on September 12th in Chiang Kai-Shek Gymnasium, Kuang-Fu Campus, where more than 3,000 new students gathered together to celebrate the beginning of their four-year study at NCKU.

As NCKU Senior Executive Vice-President Hwung-Hweng Hwung, Vice-President for Student Affairs Bih-Ching Shu, Vice-President for General Affairs Jing-Wen Chen and Deputy Vice-President for Academic Affairs Wei-Yung Wang opened up a box, balloons floated into the air, symbolizing the ambitions and dreams that the new students will accomplish and fulfill.

Under the blessings of the teachers and senior students, the new students wrote down their expectations for the next four years at NCKU on the dream cards and rolled a giant planet ball which signified the perseverance and impulse of the students in chasing their dreams.

On behalf of NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, Senior Executive Vice-President Hwung-Hweng Hwung welcomed the freshmen, “NCKU is one the top two universities in Taiwan. After four years of NCKU education, you will definitely become a top student because you have the best university campus, best university teachers and best administrative care.”

Senior Executive Vice-President Hwung-Hweng Hwung stressed, “Students have to make good use of their four years of stay in university. They have to correct their bad habits, such as sleeping late and surfing the Internet till midnight, from high school, and concentrate on studying, interacting with classmates and listening to lectures from other colleges. Thus, after you graduate from university, you will have cross-disciplinary knowledge and broader choice of job opportunities. However, to be good at studying is not enough. To become an excellent NCKU student, you must be skilled at studying and also having fun and social caring.”

Vice-President for Student Affairs Bih-Ching Shu said, “NCKU has the best teachers, the best environment, the best equipments and the best students. The most important task for the students at NCKU is learning. Learning is not limited to the knowledge acquired from lectures, because it extends beyond classroom. We hope students at NCKU are good at studying, having fun and helping others. Certainly, during their four years of study at NCKU, the students may encounter frustration and failure, but frustration and failure are the best opportunities for learning.”

Vice-President for General Affairs Jing-Wen Chen expressed, “Many students come from different cities or counties in Taiwan. The Office of General Affairs will pay special attention to students’ basic necessities of life. Some of the students may not be familiar with Tainan yet, so please keep in mind of traffic safety, especially areas which are listed as dangerous by the Office of Student Affairs. In addition, the Office of General Affairs will fully support any problem students may have with dormitories.”

Just before the start of the semester on September 13th, National Cheng Kung University held 2010 Freshmen Orientation Camp on September 12th to welcome the new students and organized a series of activities, including video playback, club performance and celebrity lecture, for the students to quickly adapt to the new environment.

The gift NCKU presented to each of the freshmen was a practical bag, containing disposable chopsticks, mask, card and calendar, and it was delivered to each student early in the morning.
