To increase parents’ knowledge and understanding of the teaching and learning environment of the university, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, held Freshmen Parents’ Meeting on September 11th in Cheng-Hsing Hall of College of Medicine, NCKU.

Prior to the beginning of the semester, NCKU Vice Presidents and Deans of the nine colleges have attended Freshmen Parents’ Meeting and engaged in dialogues with nearly 700 parents, exchanging views on issues related to learning environment and students’ schoolwork, accommodation and safety.

On behalf of NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, Vice-President for Student Affairs Bih-Ching Shu first welcomed the parents, “Even though President Lai is away on a business trip, he values Freshman Parents’ Meeting very seriously and has written a letter to express his greeting.”

In the letter, President Lai welcomed the new students to become part of the NCKU family, “It is the first time many students are away from home. They have to adapt to new study habits, become independent from their parents and learn to get along with others and further integrate with the society. Parents may worry about their children’s stay at NCKU, but I assure everyone that NCKU will offer the best learning environment and life education to the students, so they can both mentally and emotionally mature.”

President Lao also mentioned, “During their four years of study at NCKU, the students will learn professional knowledge and technologies and most importantly the philosophy of life, and cultivate good morals, self-learning ability, the spirit of independence, international communication skills and international perspective. To reach these goals, the university needs the parents’ assistance. We hope parents can give their children more space to foster the ability to solve problems and maintain close contacts with the school, college and teachers to keep track of the students’ leaning and living status.”

President Lai revealed, “National Cheng Kung University is one of the few universities in Taiwan which organizes Freshmen Parents’ Meeting every year for the parents to understand the school and take part in the learning process and growing experience of their children.”

In the meeting, parents have inquired about issues related to dormitories, course selection, double degree, minor, drop-out, improvement of foreign language ability, and job employment after graduation.

Vice-President for Student Affairs Bih-Ching Shu said, “With more than 20,000 students in the school, we only have more than 6,000 beds. However, the new students will always be assigned dormitories, since they need some time to adjust to the new environment. For students who are in their second year or above, we also provide rental information and rental fair to ensure the safety of students who live outside.”

In response to the questions regarding job employment after graduation, the Deans of the colleges emphasized, “Students at NCKU will receive professional training, so parents should feel at ease. Learning attitude is what determines a student’s future job employment. Students should learn cross-disciplinary knowledge and strengthen capacities beyond professional knowledge to accumulate their strength for future workplace.”

Associate Vice President for International Affairs Cheng Hung Huang added, “NCKU currently has more than 600 international students who come from more than 70 countries. More than 300 English-taught courses are offered each semester at NCKU. The selection of English-taught courses and the interaction with international students are helpful to students’ future employment.”
