Hohai University President Wang and NCKU President Lai Hoped to Cooperate in Water Conservancy and Marine Fields

President Wang Cheng of Hohai University, a state key university under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education of China, has visited President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, on August 13th and both sides hoped to cooperate in water conservancy and marine fields.

National Cheng Kung University and Hohai University have a long cooperative relationship since 1993. In the aspect of student exchange, Hohai University has dispatched more than 30 students to NCKU for research study and NCKU has also sent more than 10 students to Hohai University. As for faculty exchange, teachers have participated in one to three months short-term visits and jointly organized seminars.

President Wang of Hohai University said, “In addition to coastal engineering and hydraulic engineering, in the future, both universities can also engage in the exchange and research of environmental related issues. NCKU Tainan Hydraulics Laboratory and NCKU Coastal Ocean Monitoring Center are also our objects of interest for cooperation.”

NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai expressed, “National Cheng Kung University and Hohai University have the same expertise in water conservancy and marine research. As the environment develops, experts from the related fields have become increasingly important.”

President Lai also mentioned, “NCKU is internationally renowned in the fields of water conservancy and civil engineering. Hohai University is also notable for water conservancy, and it has participated in construction projects of important ports, channels and dams. Thus, both universities can seek more opportunities for future cooperation.”

President Lai revealed during the meeting, “Today, people’s awareness of environmental protection has increased. Environmental protection issues and public safety issues raised after economic development have also gradually increased. In addition to looking at the issues from the technological view, it’s more important to look at them from the humanistic and social view.”

Hohai University mainly focuses on the research and study of water resources, and it primarily educates engineering subjects, with coordinated development of engineering, science, economics, management, arts and law. It is part of Project 211 (a development initiative by the Chinese government involving over 100 key universities) and it has set up a graduate school.

The university has three campuses, comprising a total of 132 hectares (326 acres). The main campus, covering 45 hectares (111 acres), is located at the northern foot of Qingliang Hill in Nanjing. With green shade trees, fragrant flowers in four seasons and an elegant environment, it is one of the 300 Best Green Campuses, and has won Jiangsu Provincial Award of Garden University.
