The 19th South Taiwan Statistics Conference and 2010 Cross-Strait Conference on Probability and Statistics, organized by NCKU Department of Accounting and Statistics, is held from July 6th to July 7th in College of Management, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, presenting more than 200 papers and attracting approximately 550 attendees.

Since its establishment in 1992, the South Taiwan Statistics Conference has become one of the most important national annual events in the field of statistics, promoted international and national academic research and information exchange and strengthened the platform of academic exchange among statistic-related organizations.

NCKU former President Jerry Jer-Ru Maa expressed, “In recent years, technology, especially the technology of computer and information, advances very quickly. This has a huge influence on statistics. The 19th South Taiwan Statistics Conference has a total of 5 sessions which take place in 11 rooms. The amount of papers published is significant. Even though we have limited time for each paper publication, the exchange among experts and scholars does not require too much detail. In addition to paper publication and panel discussion, the participant can take this opportunity to get to know one another and even create future cooperation. I believe this is more meaningful. Experts on statistics can use the method of quantification to present the problems people are curious about in numbers. This is extremely important for the society.”

Dean of NCKU College of Management Yu-Hern Chang said, “Through paper publication and panel discussion, experts and scholars from the field of statistics can communicate, exchange and establish a platform for mutual cooperation. Thus, the conference is a major event for both NCKU College of Management and the academia. The theme of the conference today emphasizes on financial statistics, biometrics and bioinformatics. The topics include health care, teaching statistics, data mining and census and statistics. People often say that mathematics is the mother of science. However, based on my opinion, statistics should be the mother of applied science. Finance and biology all need statistics to present the best research achievements. With vast and immediate discussion, I believe the conference today is helpful to the promotion of cross-strait academic exchange and the elevation of statistics.”

Prof. Yun-Chan Chi, the Chairperson of the conference and Chairwoman of NCKU Department of Accounting and Statistics, mentioned, “In 1992, the Institute of Statistical Science, Academia Sinica, invited many internationally renowned scholars to come back to Taiwan for its 10th Anniversary celebration. At that time, Prof Hung Chen of Department of Mathematics at National Taiwan University was visiting National Sun Yat-sen University. He took this opportunity to invite few of the scholars to come to the university and thus established the first South Taiwan Statistics Conference, which was initially named The First Kaohsiung District Statistics Conference.”

Prof. Yun-Chan Chi further explained, “To expand the scale, the conference was renamed the South Taiwan Statistics Conference. National Cheng Kung University was the organizer of the 4th, 6th, 9th and 14th conference. Year after year, National Cheng Kung University, National Sun Yat-sen University and National Chung Cheng University have become the backbone of the South Taiwan Statistics Conference. Thus the statistic academic event in South Taiwan has gradually become active. Since its establishment in 2000, National University of Kaohsiung has organized the 12th conference. The location of the 13th conference was in Taipei and it was organized by the Department of Statistics at National Chengchi University. Even though the conference is still named South Taiwan Statistics Conference, it should have already become the largest statistics conference in Taiwan. The number of participants this year has increased to 550, including dozens of overseas scholars and experts.”

Prof. Yun-Chan Chi emphasized, “Unlike previous conferences, the 19th South Taiwan Statistics Conference has opened up to young students. We welcomed master or Ph.D students to publish their papers. For young students, statistics is a very abstract concept that is difficult to absorb. I believe with pane discussion, a major part of the conference this year, students can grasp the concept of statistics more easily.”

The 19th South Taiwan Statistics Conference and 2010 Cross-Strait Conference on Probability and Statistics are organized by Department of Accounting and Statistics at National Cheng Kung University and co-organized by the Institute of Statistical Science of Academia Sinica, Chinese Statistical Association, Chunghwa Data Mining Society, The Chinese Institute of Probability and Statistics, Department of Central Processing of National Science Council, Mathematics Research Promotion Center of National Science Council, Banyan Garden Statistics Cultural and Educational Foundation, Zhang Wen Bao Cultural and Educational Foundation as well as Office of Research and Development at National Cheng Kung University.

From 10 invited lecturers and 65 audiences in the first conference to 200 published papers and 550 audiences in the 19th conference, it’s evident that the South Taiwan Statistics Conference has become one of the most important annual statistical events in Taiwan, expecting experts, scholars and students to develop a deeper understanding of statistics and trigger mutual exchange.
