Tainan, Taiwan, July 3rd, 2010
Students from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, will travel to remote villages at Erhai Lake, Yunnan Province, China, to install environmental toilets for the villagers and donate collected stationary, toys and clothes to local children.
NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai presented the flag to students at 11 am, July 3rd in a meeting prior to their departure, acknowledging their courage to travel to remote areas for service learning and encouraging them to obtain valuable experience from the opportunity.
President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai expressed, “The educational goal of NCKU is that graduates should possess international perspective, cross-disciplinary knowledge and social caring. The fact that students are willing to sacrifice time and money to go to remote places for service learning is the implementation of the principle. The purpose of the repair of environmental toilets is to reduce the damage of humans on environment. I expect each student, on behalf of young people in Taiwan, to have excellent performance in Erhai Lake, Yunnan Province.”
President Lai also reminded students to pay attention to water sanitation and their own health conditions. He believed, “Even though we’re providing assistance, we must learn from the process of service. Students need to have positive attitude in the exchange with local people and try to understand the local culture and life.”
Vice-President Bih-Ching Shu for Student Affairs pointed out, “The Office of Student Affairs has organized service learning programs, providing opportunities for students learn from service. As for overseas service learning, careful evaluations are mandatory prior to departure. After more than two years of planning, the first overseas service learning team is finally formed. I encourage students to grasp this opportunity and make the best out of it.”
The first NCKU Overseas Service Learning Team, including one instructor and eleven students, departs on July 5th and will be arriving at Erhai Lake, Yunnan Province, China, on July 6th and lodge at farmhouses.
The student leader of the service learning team mentioned, “Erhai Lake is located in Yunnan Province, China. Its maximum length is 42.58 km and its maximum width is 9 km. The surface area of the lake is 256.5 km2. Because of the increase of fishing and garbage, the discharge of wastewater and the improper sanitary treatment, the ecological environment of Erhai Lake is damaged and the water pollution is worsened. The contaminated water will not only harm human health, it will also destroy ecosystem and affect human life. The plan this year is to install environmental toilets of the villages along the shores of Erhai Lake. We hope to protect the environment of Erhai Lake and promote the awareness and education of environmental protection.”
The members of the NCKU Overseas Service Planning project believed, “The trip is a challenge for us. It’s important to personally experience, observe and reflect on the journey to further understand ourselves.”
