Tainan, Taiwan, June 15th, 2010
Dr. Han-Min Hsia, former President of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan, celebrated his 80th birthday with the blessings from President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, Senior Executive Vice-President Hwung-Hweng Hwung, former President Chiang Kao, former President Hung-Shan Weng, Secretary General Woei-Shyan Lee, former Dean of College of Engineering Ke-Yang Li and his wife, as well as dozens of directors, chairmen, professors, former students and previous colleagues.
The celebration ceremony, organized by The Engineering Science Foundation of NCKU and the NCKU Department of Engineering Science, was held in Y. S. Auditorium at NCKU Department of Engineering Science, where staff prepared a three-layer cake and the guests presented banquets of flowers sang the birthday song.
In the opening of the event, President Yi-Tzung Jiang of The Engineering Science Foundation of NCKU expressed, “Dr. Han-Min Hsia is an excellent teacher in the Department of Engineering Science. Back in 1977, Dr. Hsia was already the President of Provincial Kaohsiung Institute of Technology, now National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences. He was extremely busy at that time. However, every Saturday, he would come to our department to teach us about heat conduction. Dr. Hsia was most noted for his serious and strict teaching. Under his supervision, students all had excellent achievements. For example, President Mark Li of Ten Ren Tea Co., Ltd., the largest tea seller in Taiwan, is one of the students of Dr. Hsia. Dr. Hsia has made numerous contributions to Department of Engineering Science and National Cheng Kung University. I believe those who have studied under Dr. Hsia all have vivid memories of him.”
Department Chair Teh-Lu Liao of the Department of Engineering Science at NCKU praised Dr. Han-Min Hsia to be the pusher of engineering science and education, “The teaching and care of Dr. Hsia have contributed greatly to National Cheng Kung University. The Department of Engineering Science was established in 1965 and Dr. Hsia assumed the position of Department Chair in 1967. We only had approximately 40 undergraduate students. After Dr. Hsia assumed the position, he consolidated the programs and extended the duration of employment of outstanding teachers. From then 40 undergraduates to currently 700 students in the department as well as nearly 4,000 alumni, Dr. Hsia has made great contributions to the development of the entire Department of Engineering Science. The graduated students all have outstanding performance in various industries in the society. The Department of Engineering Science truly appreciates the efforts and contributions of Dr. Hsia and we wish Dr. Hsia and his wife happiness and the best of health.”
NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai revealed, “Even though I’m not a graduate of National Cheng Kung University, I’ve often heard of talks about Dr. Han-Min Hsia. Everyone believed that Dr. Hsia has played a significant role in the development history of National Cheng Kung University. When Dr. Hsia assumed the position of President, he expanded the university and set the foundations for its future development. Everyone can see that National Cheng Kung University is one of the national universities with the most comprehensive campus. There’s no university like NCKU that includes all colleges in one campus. It’s not only a miracle in Taiwan, but also a rare resource in the university.”
President Lai also mentioned, “Dr. Hsia specializes in medicine, thus people naturally believe that Dr. Hsia’s greatest contribution to NCKU is the establishment of College of Medicine. The establishment of College of Medicine is not only establishing a new college, but also transforming a narrower and professional university to a comprehensive university. The establishment of the College of Medicine is not simple since it requires many conditions. The difficulties of the construction and process are beyond people’s imagination. However, this project, from thinking to implementation, was completed during Dr. Hsia’s reign of presidency, making NCKU College of Medicine the most important medical center in Southern Taiwan. Patients in Southern Taiwan no longer need to go to Taipei anymore. Dr. Hsia not only contributed to NCKU, but also to the entire population in Southern Taiwan. The inauguration ceremony of the new NCKU Outpatient Building was recently held on June 12th. Dr. Hsia was pleased to witness the flowers and fruits of the seeds he planted 20 years ago. We have to thank Dr. Han-Min Hsia as we enjoy the fruits of his efforts.”
Dr. Han-Min Hsia humbly claimed, “The achievements of NCKU are the joint efforts of succeeding presidents and President Lai. They have worked together to make College of Medicine at National Cheng Kung University more complete. National Cheng Kung University has always been sincere and honest. These are the characteristics and spirit of NCKU. I would like to take this opportunity to show my appreciation for you coming here today and thank you for your blessing. I expect President Lai to create more brilliant records for National Cheng Kung University.”
