Lecturer Hsiu-Chen Liao of Department of History, Associate Prof. Ting-Wei Hou of Department of Engineering Science and Prof. Wen-Yu Su of Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan, are selected as university excellent counselors of academic year 2009.

To enhance teachers’ counseling service and encourage their participation in student counseling, the outstanding teachers will each receive a medal and a prize of NT$50,000, in recognition of their efforts and performance on counseling students’ life, learning and activities, during the ceremony expected to be held on November 8th, 2010.

Lecturer Hsiu-Chen Liao of Department of History has been a counselor for 20 years. She believed that as facilitators, the main purpose of counselors is to cultivate students’ ability to solve problems, help them to understand themselves, accept themselves and develop themselves as well as collaborate with teams and care for others.

Through individual talks and group gatherings, Lecturer Liao understands the personal interests, class situations, club participation, working conditions, future plans, time management and emotional management of students, and she also counsel students who fall behind in their grades with regular talks.

As an excellent listener, Lecturer Hsiu-Chen Liao voluntarily refers psychologists to students with special conditions and irregularly arranges meetings, inviting students or graduated students to share their experience with the counseled students.

Prof. Wen-Yu Su of Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering believed counseling students is listening to their voices and understanding their real needs rather than passing own ideas or reminding students to study well.

Prof. Su has successfully counseled a Japanese student, assisting him to create a business with engineering knowledge, and cared for a student with autism, solving his troubles and reducing his anxiety through easy chats.
