Prof. Jiin-Shuh Jean of Department of Earth Sciences at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan, was appointed as the Chairman of International Medical Geology Association-Taiwan Chapter (IMGA-Taiwan), which was officially established on May 19th, 2010, in Tainan, Taiwan, during the scientific activities of The Third International Congress of Arsenic in the Environment.

The Taiwan Chapter on Medical Geology is composed of over 12 members with representation from a wide range of disciplines including biomedical, public health and geosciences areas. The Chapter enjoys the participation of geoscientists, epidemiologist, toxicologist, public health professionals, medical doctors, with particular interest on the geochemistry, environmental and human health effects of arsenic from contaminated drinking water.

Prof. Jiin-Shuh Jean expressed, “In the future, I will continue promote the interests of national researchers on medical geology, provide educational opportunities such as forum and discussion, disseminate information, motivate the advanced technology of medical geology, and elevate Taiwan’s research and achievements of medical geology together with experts, scholars and students from the related fields.”

Prof. Jean said, “The establishment of the Taiwan Chapter will help national groundwater arsenic contamination research and accelerate the establishment of national arsenic research team, extending the research project to Barasat, a city in the outskirts of Kolkata, West Bengal, India, and conducting research of groundwater arsenic contamination and its health effects.”

The membership of International Medical Geology Association-Taiwan Chapter includes individual member, student member and honorary member. Anyone who agrees with the purpose of the chapter and is above 20-year-old can become an individual member by filling out the entrance application to pass in the council and paying the annual membership fee, which is €40 (40 Euros). Anyone who is an undergraduate, master or doctoral student in academic program recognized by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, or a researcher of medical geology, hydraulic geology, environmental geology and environmental epidemiology, can become a student member. Any member who has engaged in the technology development and has made special contributions in the above-mentioned fields will be recommended to become an honorary member.

The International Medical geology Association (IMGA) was originally launched in 2004 in Florence, Italy, at the 32nd International geologic Congress. Since its establishment, the Association has attracted over 1,000 corresponding members from about 70 countries.

The purpose of International Medical Geology Association is to facilitate interactions between geoscientists and biomedical and public health researchers in addressing human and animal health problems caused by geologic materials or geologic processes, and its objectives are to stimulate interest and promote research in medical geology, provide a forum for discussion, disseminate information, provide educational opportunities in medical geology, promote state-of-the-art technologies in medical geology, as well as inspire the highest standard of professional ethics of its members.

To better serve the needs of its members, the Association has regional councilors who represent IMGA in different parts of the world and six councilors who represent the broad geographic distribution of medical geology and the wide range of disciplines that are covered in this field. Regional divisions on medical geology are also being formed in South America, Southern Mediterranean, Asian subcontinent, sub-Saharan Africa, North America, etc.

The International Medical Geology Association has organized The Third International Congress on Arsenic in the Environment from May 17th to May 21st, 2010, in National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan. It’ll organize The 27th Society for Environmental Geochemistry and Health International Conference in Galway, Ireland, during Easter 2010. The First International Symposium on Medical Geology of Iran will be held from June 14th to June 16th, 2010, in Tehran, Iran.

Additional Information:

Chairman Jiin-Shuh Jean of International Medical Geology Association-Taiwan Chapter is a professor from the Department of Earth Sciences at National Cheng Kung University and the organizer of The Third International Congress on Arsenic in the Environment. He’s also the Associate Editor for internationally renowned Journal of Hydrology and Hydrogeology Journal and the Co-Editor for Water Research in 2010.

Prof. Jiin-Shuh Jean was the first to raise the concept of biomedical hydrogeology dealing with environmental epidemics (such as Enterovirus and Blackfoot Disease) in Hydrogeology Journal in 1999. He also brought up the association between rainfall rate and occurrence of enterovirus epidemic due to a contaminated well in Journal of Applied Microbiology in 2006.

His three year project, the geological microorganisms, chemical characteristics and health effects of arsenic-rich alluvial aquifers, from National Science Council, Taiwan, is expected to end in July, 2010, hoping to find the proper solutions for groundwater arsenic in Taiwan, Bangladesh and India.
