2010 NCKU Commencement Held on June 5th
Tainan, Taiwan, June 5th, 2010
The 2010 NCKU Commencement was held on June 5th, in Chung Cheng Hall, Kuang-Fu Campus, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan.
NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, Senior Executive Vice-President Hwung-Hweng Hwung, Senior Executive Vice-President Da-Hsuan Feng, the Notable Mathematician Shing-Tung Yau as well as 5,735 graduating students have together thrown their paper planes into the air, symbolizing that they’re spreading their wings and flying towards a brighter future with the reminders from teachers and blessings from junior schoolmates.
In the opening address, NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai first congratulated all the graduating students, “You have worked hard in National Cheng Kung University for the past few years and have finished your study as of today. Your student life has finally come to an end. However, whether you decide to continue studies or enter the workplace, your learning process and mental growth will not stop here. On the contrary, what you’ve learned in university is only the basis. The knowledge and skill you’ll need in the future are mainly built on this basis. However, today, you can celebrate your graduation with your family, friends and teachers. Without them, your learning process would not be successful.”
President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai also gave a few words of advice to the graduating students, “First of all, you need to have a positive attitude of learning. Graduating from a top national university doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be successful in the future. Dr. Britton Chance, who is now 96-year-old, is the best example. At his age, Dr. Chance still continues to conduct research and supervise students. Adjunct Prof. C.C. Ma is another excellent example. He finished his last lecture when he was 95-year-old. Both figures are excellent models of lifelong learning. As new fields continue to emerge in the future, your working field may be completely different from the field you’ve learned at university. Recently, Dr. Paul Liao, one of the outstanding NCKU alumni, has published a memoir entitled Turn Water into Gold. He has studied civil engineering for his BS, later to wastewater and sewage treatment and fish farming, and becomes an internationally renowned expert on hydraulic engineering and fish farming. Therefore, a successful person must continuously absorb new cross-disciplinary knowledge.”
“Secondly, you must respect professional ethics and humane accomplishments. The problems that international society is facing, such as economic depression, are all caused by the neglect of professional ethics. Because people are treating others and demanding others with harshness, our society also lacks harmony. From what we’ve seen on the media, where public representatives and citizens are shouting and yelling at one another to receive the most attention, I expect NCKU graduates to cultivate self-disciplines, respect others and set an example for the society, allowing you to work more smoothly and making our society more peaceful.”
“Thirdly, you must have international perspectives and confidence to take on challenges. In other words, you need to have the courage to dare to try and face failures. Failure is the best experience in one’s life. A successful entrepreneur once shared his experience. When he was looking for capitalists to invest in ventures, he discovered that those who have the experience of failure in starting an enterprise are more favored by the capitalists. The accumulation of the experience of failure is the foundation of success. NCKU graduates should make efforts to start business, continue innovate and search for your dream. Even if you’re unsuccessful, you have not failed.”
“Last but not the least, I expect NCKU graduates to show gratitude without forgetting your origin. The most precious school tradition of NCKU is the inheritance between alumni and students and teachers. The spirit of mutual assistance is what holds NCKU’s reputation together. I also expect NCKU graduates to care for society, love earth and protect the environment. These are the responsibilities of a 21st century citizen. Delta Electronics Founder and Chairman Bruce Cheng, one of the outstanding alumni of National Cheng Kung University, who cares for earth and contributes to society, is our best model.”
“Today, you’re walking out of the campus as graduates of NCKU. In the past three years, I have grown with you. I expect each one of you to make NCKU a part of ourselves, like what I have done. I wish you a successful and bright future.”
President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai not only encouraged the graduating students to maintain an attitude of lifelong learning, absorb cross-disciplinary knowledge, respect working ethics, possess excellent humane accomplishments and act as role models for society, with international perspectives, confidence and ambitions to face challenges, he also expected the students to show gratitude, care for society, love earth and protect the environment, undertaking the responsibilities of a 21st century citizen.
During the graduation ceremony, President Lai has awarded the notable mathematician Shing-Tung Yau, one of the 1982 winners of the Fields Medal, with Honorary Doctorate degree, in recognition of his academic achievements, humane caring and persistent spirit.
Dr. Shing-Tung Yau, the recipient of NCKU Honorary Doctorate degree, expressed, “Congratulation to all the graduating students today. After more than 10 years of efforts and struggle, you’ve finally received the bachelor degree of a renowned university. You have an infinite future in front of you. I hope you can grasp this opportunity to start your career and help National Cheng Kung University to become an internationally top university. The success of great universities in the world, including Harvard University, Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is based on the support of their graduates. Alumni can help their universities with donations and their work and achievements in the society. We teach graduates to make efforts and contributions to the culture and business in the society and a better future of the world.”
Dr. Shing-Tung Yau not only encouraged the graduating students to give back to their alma mater, help the disadvantaged and minorities and create a new outlook of Chinese culture and Asian culture, he also expected National Cheng Kung University to lead the development of 21st century universities and the entire Asian culture.
