The President of Judicial Yuan and the Chief Justice of Constitutional Court, Dr. In-Jaw Lai, has delivered a speech on his course of learning and thinking on June 1st in Library B1 Conference Room, Cheng-Kung Campus, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan.
President In-Jaw Lai not only shared his study methods and learning process with the audiences, mostly students from the Department of Law at NCKU, he also encouraged them to grasp every opportunity to learn and make excellent preparations for the future.
President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai of National Cheng Kung University, the host of the forum, expressed, “NCKU Forum is the most important forum of all the lecture series at NCKU. The speakers are experts and elites from various fields in society. The speaker today, President In-Jaw Lai of Judicial Yuan, is a distinguished scholar. He received his bachelor degree from National Chung Hsing University, master degree from National Taiwan University and doctoral degree from Harvard University, U.S.A. After he devoted himself to politics, he was appointed as Deputy Minister of Finance, Commissioner of Ministry of Finance, Lieutenant Governor of Taiwan Provincial Government, Deputy Premier of Taiwan Provincial Government and Executive Yuan Senior Advisor to the President of the Republic of China. He has a very rich learning experience. I believe the sharing of his learning experience and personal wisdom will benefit the elites, scholars and future graduates with us today.”
President In-Jaw Lai said, “From a farm child to the President of Judicial Yuan and the Chief Justice of Constitutional Court, the course was not planned. National Cheng Kung University is an excellent university. However, even in the best universities, students will still feel anxious or confused about their future life on the graduation eve.”
Quoting from the research statistics of National Science Council, over one-third of students chose departments against their original intentions and one-fourth of the students wanted to transfer to another department or take re-examination. During his youth, President In-Jaw Lai was just as anxious and confused. He stated, “It’s normal for young men to feel anxious about their future. What I have experienced was not of my original plan. Thus you should not feel too frustrated about the difference in your future career.”
President In-Jaw Lai mentioned, “I was a farm child, growing up in a poor family. I never thought about going to school. However, the rural society respected teachers highly. When my teacher told my parents that I was a person of great potential, I had the opportunity to enter junior high school and an agricultural vocational school. After graduation, I had no intention to apply for university, so I served the army. During the period of my service in the army, I became the squad leader and met many college soldiers. They encouraged me to continue pursuit my studies and even gave me university entrance exam preparation books. Therefore, I studied every morning, from 4 am to 6 am, and in other free time. Later I got into the Department of Law at National Chung Hsing University. Though the Department of Law was not necessarily what I wanted, I still cherished this learning opportunity.”
President In-Jaw Lai also shared an episode of childhood memory from the preface of The Story of Mankind by Hendrik Willem van Loon, “When Hendrik followed his uncle to climb up Grotel St. Laurenskerk in Rotterdam on the stairs, he looked out each window and saw beautiful sceneries. As they finally reached the top, he was deeply amazed by the views of Rotterdam streets. It was at this moment that he realized that the higher he climbs, the brighter and prettier the light and sceneries become. It has also triggered his motivation to learn.”
“When I began to study law, I had many questions. It felt like I was in the dark tower that Hendrik Willem van Loon walked in but desperately wanting to get out. Thus I tried to solve one question each day. My longing for knowledge grew. It was like one window after another was being opened each time.”
President In-Jaw Lai encouraged the students, “Whether you’re studying law, finance or economic, you can expand your interests. Do not limit yourself to the department you’re studying in. In addition to developing professional knowledge or skill, you should at least cultivate an additional interest.”
President In-Jaw Lai emphasized, “Life is truly difficult to plan. You must realize that life usually doesn’t go as you planned. But life is not do drift with the tide and yield to the flow. You need to absorb new knowledge at all times, enrich yourself and make excellent preparations.
