Prof. Albert King, a Member of the USA National Academy of Engineering (NAE), a Distinguished Professor of Wayne State University at Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A., and a renowned expert in impact biomechanics, delivered a speech on preventative strategies in medicine from a biomechanical perspective and celebrated his golden (50th) wedding anniversary in the conference room of College of Engineering at National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, on May 27th.

Prior to The Innovative Health Tech Forum conjointly organized by College of Engineering and College of Medicine, staffs from the NCKU College of Engineering have created a heart and the number 50 with small candles and prepared a bouquet of 99 roses to welcome Prof. Albert King and his beloved wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Veronica King.

Prof. Wen-Teng Wu, Dean of NCKU College of Engineering expressed, “I’m extremely pleased to have Prof. Albert King here with us to participate in the feast of knowledge. I’m also honored to be here to share the joy of the 50th wedding anniversary of Prof. King and his wife.”

Prof. Chyi-Her Lin, Dean of NCKU College of Medicine, expressed, “The Innovative Health Tech Forum organized by College of Engineering and College of Medicine had a warm opening under the romantic candles. The emphasis of medical technology is nothing more than humanity. Technology needs human care to improve the lives of human beings. We can say that the celebration of the golden (50th) wedding anniversary of the couple today has embellished the spirit of the forum. Married for 50 years, Prof. Albert King and his wife have set a good example for everyone.”

In response to the surprise NCKU College of Engineering has prepared, Prof. Albert King revealed his gratitude towards Dean Wen-Teng Wu and Dean Chyi-Her Lin and Mrs. Elizabeth Veronica King blessed everyone happiness and success.

Prof. Albert King then delivered a speech on preventative strategies in medicine from a biomechanical perspective, provided examples of correct and incorrect preventative strategies and discussed the need to fully understand the causes of injuries before implementation of preventative strategies, covering the knowledge of 70 years of research in impact biomechanics.

Prof. King said, “Even with the tremendous advances made in medicine over the last two decades, prevention is better than cure. In biomechanics, one of our missions is to prevent injury or mitigate its severity. Proper preventative strategies are not easily arrived at and it is critical that we know the cause before we implement them.”

Prof. King pointed out, “The use of seat belts is one preventative strategy that has been shown to work. The principles of dynamics allowed the early automotive safety engineers to hold the occupant in the seat so he or she would not crash into the interior of the vehicle, such as the steering wheel, the windshield or the instrument panel when the car stops suddenly.”

Prof. King stated, “The airbag without seat belt use was supposed to be an improvement because it is an automatic system. However, when it was first introduced it caused severe and fatal injuries, such as atlanto-occipital separation and ventricular fibrillation when the occupant is too close to the deploying airbag.”

Prof. King also mentioned, “The solution was to use the airbag in combination with the seat belt. As a result, the automobile is now much safer for frontal crashes. Further improvements are needed to prevent intrusion of the occupant compartment so the occupant has enough room to survive, especially in severe crashes and to prevent neck injuries in rearend crashes.”

Additional Information:

Dedicated to the biomechanical studies of body collision injuries, Prof. Albert King is recognized as the most outstanding scholar for his academic achievements in the field of impact biomechanics, the first member of the USA National Academy of Engineering in the field of impact biomechanics and one of the founders of impact biomechanics and theory of vehicle safety.

Prof. Albert King received his bachelor degree of Civil Engineering from Hong Kong University in 1955, his master degree of Engineering Mechanics and doctoral degree of Biomechanics from Wayne State University, United States, in 1960 and 1966. He became a full professor at Wayne State University in 1973 and received the honorary title of Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering in 1990.

Prof. King was elected as the Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering in 1993 and the Member of National Academy of Engineering in 2000, and was appointed as Honorary Professor of Tsinghua University, China, in 2008. He has also received Bertil Aldman Award from International Research Council on Biokinetics of Impact (IRCOBI) in 2003 and Award of Merit from Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine in 2004.
