A Career Fair organized by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) was held on May 20th in National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan, targeting NCKU students, accepting on-site resumes and offering immediate interviews.

The Career Fair began from 1 pm to 3 pm on May 20th in front of the Department of Material Science and Engineering, with five executives personally enlightening and interviewing the students. About 20 students handed out their resumes and 9 students had interviews.

The campus recruit not only attracted master and doctoral students from the Department of Material Science and Engineering. Undergraduate students also grasped this opportunity to further understand the demands of enterprises for professional talents and the future trend of business.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is one of the top companies for students in the semiconductor field. They believe this event allowed them to understand the talents and the conditions enterprises needed and to strengthen their professional learning ability prior to employment.

TSMC manager expressed, “National Cheng Kung University is one of the favorites of the enterprises. Among the employees we have come into contact with in the past, those who graduated from NCKU all have excellent performance. NCKU students have team spirit and they’re capable of taking challenges and working under pressure. Especially when NCKU is so close to TSMC factory in the Southern Taiwan Science Park, NCKU students are definitely one of the main targets for TSMC in recruitment.”

The Career Fair is to allow students to further understand the future development and the operation concepts of the enterprise. Also, some of the current techniques of TSMC need to be solved from the perspective of material science. This is why the campus recruit targeted the Department of Material Science and Engineering in NCKU.

Prof. Jiunn-Der Liao, the Chairman of the Department of Material Science and Engineering in NCKU, said, “The main reason TSMC targeted the Department of Material Science and Engineering is that it will devote itself to High-K/Metal-Gate (HK/MG) Technology Approach for 28 nm in the future. In Taiwan, only the Department of Material Science and Engineering at National Cheng Kung University offers related programs. Therefore, TSMC especially targeted the students from the Department of Material Science and Engineering and the executives personally came to our campus to recruit talents.”

Prof. Liao also mentioned, “The NCKU Department of Material Science and Engineering was ranked the 18th in Essential Science Index (ESI) Ranking, 2010, for the amount of papers, in Asia. The Career Fair organized by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company signifies the acknowledgement of the Department of Material Science and Engineering and also the encouragement for the students. This campus recruit is the best starting point for mutual cooperation. In the future, two parties may jointly open programs or we may invite TSMC personnel to come to NCKU to give lectures.”

The capital expenditure of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in 2010 has reached US$4.8 billion, a huge increase compared to US$2.7 billion in 2009. The investment spending of research and development has also increased compared to the last 5 years. In 2009, the company size was 20,000 people. By the end of 2010, it’s expected to expand to 29,000 people.
