NCKU Senior Executive Vice-President Da-Hsuan Feng Called For Consensus on Environmental Protection
Tainan, Taiwan, April 22nd, 2010
Senior Executive Vice-President Da-Hsuan Feng of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan, with student leader and professors, attended the 2010 Earth Day Environmental Protection Consensus Forum on April 22nd in Fo Guang Shan Monastery, Tainan.
Senior Executive Vice-President Da-Hsuan Feng stated that environmental protection is an issue of public policy which requires people’s active participation and many platforms for extensive discussion in order to reach a consensus.
Dr. Da-Hsuan Feng said, “Environmental protection is not an issue of science and technology. It is an issue of public policy. Public policy of a democratic society requires the active participation of the citizens. National education has not instilled the concept of public policy in the minds of the students. Because the students do not have this concept, they cannot influence their parents or friends. All of you here have a heavy responsibility. Out of more than 700,000 residents in Tainan City, only 600 participated today. Each one of you is very important. With your influence, the school can become a public platform for open discussion. However, a single platform is not enough. We need many platforms such as platform of Tainan, platform of Kaohsiung, platform of Taiwan and platform of the world for people to truly discuss and solve various problems the earth is facing today.”
NCKU Student Union President Wen-Sheng Li expressed, “Earth Day is a festival for every living creature on earth. On April 22nd, environmentalists and citizens from different social fields gather together for one single purpose of a sustainably developing earth. I feel honored to participate in the event with NCKU Senior Executive Vice-President Da-Hsuan Feng and citizens of Tainan.”
Mr. Wen-Sheng Li further explained, “Why should young people care about environmental protection? I believe the voice of the young people needs to be heard. In general, plants need insects, insects need plants, animals need plants and plants need animals. All living creatures on earth need one and another. However, only one species is not needed by others. It is the human beings. Why do humans evolve? Is it because of a mistake by the creator? I think not. It’s because human beings are the only creatures with the ability to protect earth. With Earth Day as an inspiration, NCKU Student Union will continue to organize environmental protection film festivals, President Forums, seminars and activities. Environmental protection can begin at university and spread to every corner in the world.”
The 2010 Earth Day Environmental Protection Consensus Forum was divided into lectures and group discussions. The lecturer was meteorologist Chi-Ming Peng and the topics of his lectures were the cause and impact of climate change. The general moderator of the group discussions was NCKU Senior Executive Vice-President Da-Hsuan Feng. Subjects included carbon reduction, climate change and how to construct a low-carbon city as well as adjustment strategy of global climate change.
