NCKU President Michael Ming-Chaio Lai led Senior Executive Vice-President Da-Hsuan Feng, Vice-President for Academic Affairs Ming-Jer Tang, Associate Vice-President for Research and Development Yung-Nane Yang, Distinguished Professor Britton Chance, his wife Prof. Shoko Nioka and Prof. Pau-Choo Chung of Institute of Computer and Communication Engineering on April 16th to visit Delta Electronics in Southern Taiwan Science Park.

Delta Electronics Chairman Bruce Cheng first expressed his sincere welcome to the NCKU delegation led by President Lai. They visited the showroom with a variety of leading-edge products and exchanged their ideas on the mutual cooperated Near Infra-Red Breast Cancer Early Detection and Warning Device.

Chairman Cheng expressed, “A few months ago, when I heard that Dr. Britton Chance wanted to go to Taipei to visit Delta Electronics, I was very excited. In consideration of his age, I decided to greet him in the Delta Electronics in Southern Taiwan Science Park.”

President Lai said, “I feel really honored to visit Chairman Cheng and the Delta Electronics today. Delta Electronics has a strong relationship with NCKU. In the past few years, Chairman Cheng has contributed greatly to the development of NCKU, such as establishing green buildings in the NCKU campus. We are extremely grateful for the constant support and assistance of Chairman Cheng and we feel honored for developing a cooperative relationship with Delta Electronics. I expect our relationship to be sustainable and become more intimate.”

NCKU delegation led by President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai first watched a brief clip which introduced Delta Electronics, and then they visited the showroom which displayed various Delta products. For many years, Delta Electronics is committed to environmental protection, energy saving, lead-free production, and waste management programs, fulfilling its promise of a better earth and providing a healthy working environment.

Vice President of Investor Services, Corporate Communications, R.T. Tsai said, “The variety of products displayed in the showroom mainly focus on information technology industry, telecom industry as well as products in the field of outer space. New products such as super capacitor, energy saving ballast, blood sugar testing device, and near infra-red breast cancer early detection and warning device that we developed with NCKU. Electronic paper is also the newest product of Delta Electronics. Our DC/AC solar power inverter is currently the most efficient in the world, which can reach up to 98%. This system is already installed in the Kaohsiung World Games Stadium.”

“In terms of DC fans, Delta Electronics is the world’s largest supplier. We have different kinds of fans which are used in information technology, telecom, vehicle industry as well as household bathroom equipments. In the aspect of network products, Delta Networks, the subsidiary of Delta Electronics, is specialized in manufacturing Internet, network and Netcom products, such as wireless and broadband products, to Sysco and Intel in United States. In the aspect of hybrid car, we manufacture every key component. We also produce industrial automatic products that are applied in textile machines, elevators and industrial automation.”

Prof. Pau-Choo Chung of Institute of Computer and Communication Engineering commented, “The purpose of this visit to further strengthen the cooperation between NCKU and Delta Electronics, especially on the use of near infrared on tumor detection. It’s expected that after the improvement of equipments and technologies, the near infra-red breast cancer early detection and warning device we developed together may be applied on other types of cancers, such as skin cancer. The near infrared is very helpful on cancer detection. In the future, we’ll collect more medical record information, improve equipments during experiment process and increase more functions. The basic principles, theories and equipments do work, but when they’re operated by people, human behaviors may cause inaccuracy in detection. Simply put, the goal of the mutual cooperation is to design equipments for breast cancer and tumor detection.”

Prof. Pau-Choo Chung further explained, “Near infrared is a type of light. We apply equipments designed with this light on women’s breasts. The light will penetrate women’s skin and absorb back, thus we can understand whether the skin tissues are normal tissues or infected tissues. Tissues with infection or tumor will have a larger blood flow. We use this information and the analyzed scattering coefficient to decide whether it’s a tumor or not. We also think about whether the equipments need further revision. Because Asians and Westerners have different breast densities and tissues, improvements need to be made.”

Technical Section Manager of New Business Programs, Delta Electronics, Howard Liu mentioned, “The cooperation between National Cheng Kung University and Delta Electronics is still continuing. The commercialization of near infra-red breast cancer early detection and warning device, which will allow self-treatment of the general public, is the ultimate goal for both parties.”
