Hainan Province Department of Education Director Hu Visited NCKU President Lai
Tainan, Taiwan, April 15th, 2010
Director Guang-Hui Hu of Department of Education, Hainan Province, China, visited President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai of National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, on April 15th to exchange ideas on cross-strait higher education and discuss potential medical cooperation.
“Hainan Province currently has over 8 million people but only 17 universities. Compared to Taiwan with over 20 million people and 160 universities, the flourishing development of Taiwan’s higher education, especially the outstanding performance of National Cheng Kung University, is worth of study for Hainan. I look forward to cooperating with NCKU,” said Director Guang-Hui Hu.
Director Hu praised National Cheng Kung University to be an excellent academic institution with many aspects worth learning. With its advanced medical technologies and management, he hoped NCKU can assist Hainan in building a top health care system.
When Director Hu inquired about the difference between Mainland students and Taiwanese students, President Lai replied, “Mainland culture and Taiwanese culture are slightly different. Thus when Mainland students come to study in Taiwan, they will see how Taiwanese university students study and live and benefit from them. Mainland students are very enthusiastic and hard-working. Their learning attitudes are something Taiwanese students should reflect upon.”
President Lai also expressed, “NCKU College of Management has just attended Boao Forum with Hainan Province Department of Education a few days ago. NCKU has excellent medical technologies and hospital management. NCKU Hospital will soon establish its branch in Kinmen. With the natural conditions and advantages of Hainan, NCKU can also establish a medical and biotechnological cooperation with Hainan in the future.”
Director Hu pointed out, “The medical cooperation goal of Hainan is not just ordinary health care. The next step is the preservation of health. Hainan Province is relatively weak in this aspect. Because of the popularity of Hainan resort for holiday, the market is very big if we can improve health and wellness. As the second ideal residence, wealthy men buy villas, spend the winter, go on holidays and enjoy their retirement life in Hainan. Thus the market of health and wellness is very big in the future.”
Regarding the issue of the recognition of cross-strait studies, diplomas or degrees, Director Hu said, “We are selective in recognizing diplomas. A diploma of National Cheng Kung University will definitely be recognized. The diploma of a university, even a Western university, that we’re not familiar with, may not be recognized. Students who finish their study in overseas universities and come back to Mainland feel reluctant to say which university they graduate from. Now returning home from overseas study is unlike the past. It is the university you choose and the department you study that matter.”
Director Hu revealed, “Hainan Province Government has instructed the Department of Education to cooperate with several overseas universities which are on top of world ranking. Even though the cooperation subjects have not yet been determined, the preconditions are to bring outstanding teachers, technologies and management to Hainan to solidify education and to contribute to the local social and economic development. Several universities in U.S. are interested but they’re hesitant on making the decision. On the contrary, universities in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan have quick responses. I believe it’s because we have the same origin and cultural background. Once we begin discussing, it’s easy to find the common ground.”
