The fourth and last dialogue of 2010 NCKU Student Forum was held on March 23rd, from 6 pm to 9 pm, in Cheng-Hsing Hall. The speech delivered by Senior Advisor to the Office of the President of the Republic of China, Prof. Richard Chia-Tung Lee, received enthusiastic response from the audience.

Dr. Richard Chia-Tung Lee shared his ideas on caring. People believe caring is a virtue, but it is fundamentally a realistic issue. Caring should be practiced daily without intention or prior planning. There are many less fortunate people in this world. Certainly people should care for global issues such as poverty and ADIS, but more importantly, they should care for those around them.

Dr. Lee said, “Many say they want to care for the unfortunate people, but they fail to find any. It is as if people around you are not in bad situations and you assume they do not need your help. Certainly, we must care for the issues of poverty, AIDS and war in the world. However, we must realize that there are people close to us and even people in the university who need our attention. If you cannot find someone who needs care, you have serious problems.”

Senior Advisor Richard Chia-Tung Lee further explained, “Caring is not a great deal. One must not volunteer for personal interests or help at times only convenient for himself. You need to understand that your promise to help others is a long-term commitment. You cannot quit. The one who actually cares for people will find himself continuously giving because he notices people who have suffered from misfortune. I want to remind everyone to care from your heart. Then you will discover many people in need of your care.”

“Caring is a pleasant thing to do. You do not have to necessarily join any volunteer team, especially when it requires you to report what you have done and register on a paper. Caring is a common and relaxing thing to do. It is also something you and our entire nation and society need to do. If the world stops caring for others, it will become dangerous and chaotic,” said Dr. Richard Chia-Tung Lee, noted Taiwanese scholar and writer.
