The 2010 NCKU “Beautiful Banyan Garden: Art on Campus” Exhibition began on March 18th in Banyan Garden, Kuang-Fu Campus, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan.

The exhibition press conference, from 10:30am to 11:30am, invited President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai and Chi-Mei Museum Director Ling-Ling Guo and Juming Museum Executive Secretary Jui-Chi Hsueh to brief the brilliant art works and introduce renowned international artists, Gwen Marcus, Viktor Lois and Peet Yin as well as NCKU resident artists, Tsun-Tsun Lai, Hai-Ming Wei, Ren-Hong Liang, Shu-Hua Wu and Chen Li Heng-Ching.

President Lai expressed, people must have art because it is part of their life. The appreciation for beauty is what distinguishes human beings from animals. The cultivation of the appreciation for beauty is also one of the most important tasks of National Cheng Kung University. “Our educational goal is to pursue truth, meaning science and technology, goodness, meaning human character, and beauty, meaning the appreciation for music and art.”

President Lai also emphasized, NCKU is devoted to cultivating talents with professional knowledge and human accomplishments. Human accomplishments are not only nurtured from reading literature, philosophy or history. In fact, they are achieved by developing positive attitudes toward life, art, music and literature. This is the reason for the establishment of museum and the organization of many art activities in NCKU.

The art works borrowed from Chi-Mei Museum and Juming Museum will be displayed for 3 months in National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan. The exhibition period offers an opportunity for teachers, students as well as citizens in Tainan to observe the collections closely. President Lai believed, the comparison and reconciliation of the art works on campus are a vital element in elevating the humanistic education of NCKU

The art works borrowed from Chi-Mei Museum are 4 bronze statues and 6 marble statues. Since its establishment in 1990, Chi-Mei Museum has been systematically collecting masterpieces from each school of painting of each period in Western art history, from stone statues before the century and mosaic art of the Roman Empire to art works of the Renaissance, Realism, Impressionism, Surrealism, etc.

The “Taichi Series: Arch” and “Living World Series: Rest” sculptures, which reflect the progress of Ju Ming Master’s sculpture skill, are provided by Juming Museum as well.
