The second dialogue of 2010 NCKU Student Forum was held on March 16th, from 6 pm to 9 pm, in Cheng-Hsing Hall. The speech delivered by former National Policy Adviser and NTU Department of Philosophy Prof. Huo-Wang Lin received zealous response.

Prof. Huo-Wang Lin shared his opinions on cherishing. To cherish is to think positively and to treasure what you have already owned. The three things people must cherish are self, others and life. By discovering personal identity, establishing intimate relationships and realizing the meaning of living, one will lead a successful and happy life.

In order to cherish and love oneself, he must first find his self. Prof. Lin said, quoting from philosopher John Stuart Mill of the 19th century, “Finding your own unique personality is a vital element of happiness. You cannot succeed by imitating others because what is best for others may not be best for you. Each individual has a special answer to his life and there is no standard solution for happiness.”

However, to love oneself is not think only of yourself. Intimate relationships such as affection, love and friendship are important for happiness as well. Philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau of the 18th century once said, “The upmost need of human beings is to establish bond between others and themselves.” If you are the only one left in the world, you will be unhappy and your life will be meaningless. The world is wonderful because of the existence of people. There will definitely be sorrow and pain, but getting along with one another is the most exciting part of life.

Dr. Lin addressed to the students, “Life may be impermanent, helpless or insignificant. However, it is also valuable. Among the two thousand and three hundred million people in Taiwan, I promise, you do not even have a chance to say hello to 99% of them. The occasional and momentary meeting may be the only encounter you have with a particular person in this life. Therefore, it is important to establish your personal network because life is very unpredictable.”

Prof. Huo-Wang Lin believed, a meaningful life must have a goal, and this goal must exceed oneself. The lives of those who indulge in their own desires and think only of their interests do not have value or significance. If someone is happy because of your existence, then you are already successful.
