The Inauguration of NCKU Student Activity Center on March 5th

The opening ceremony of NCKU Student Activity Center was held on March 5th in National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, after nearly NT$40 million expenditure and 200 working days. The ceremony was hosted by President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, with former President Jerry Jer-Ru Maa, former Dean of College of Engineering Ke-Yang Li, Secretary General Woei-Shyan Lee, Vice-President of Student Affairs Pi-Chin Hsu, Vice-President of Academic Affairs Ming-Jer Tang, Vice-President of General Affairs Jing-Wen Chen as well as student representatives attending.

President Lai pointed out, club activity plays an important role in the university education. He believed, NCKU students should not only possess professional knowledge, but more importantly, humane accomplishments. Humane accomplishments include interpersonal relationships, international perspectives, cross-field knowledge and creativity. These accomplishments are cultivated through club activities, thus, providing space for student activities is extremely crucial.

The NCKU Student Activity Center has been reconstructed under the support of President Lai. The construction process began on May 16th, 2009, spent nearly NT$40 million and underwent approximately 20 working days. It was completed on November 23rd, 2009. After the final exams period, 113 student clubs gradually moved into the newly-established center, starting on January 18th, 2010.

The Student Center was designed by the architect Yu-Lin Chen. He used considerable glass to illustrate a bright and spacious extensity. There are 79 club offices, 3 piano rooms, 2 music practice rooms, 1 multifunctional activity room, 5 conference rooms, as well as one additional elevator within the center. According to Wen-Tzu Lo, President of the Student United Association, NCKU, the students have found the renovated Student Center to be beautiful and practical. The clubs have acquired more independent space, and the hallways and public space have become wider as well.
