NCKU “Sea Level Rise: Understanding, Expectation and Mitigation” Seminar on March 19th

Picture description
If one day, Tainan city we are familiar with no longer exist…

The 2010 “Sea Level Rise: Understanding, Expectation, and Mitigation” Seminar will be held by NCKU Thinkers Salon on March 19th. The speaker is Dr. John Church, who has spoken in the session concerning rising of sea level at the 2009 Climate Change Congress in Copenhagen. We encourage everyone to participate in this event.

“Taipei basin is flooded. The whole city is submerged in water and the capital shall move immediately.” This is not the story we find in sci-fi movie. We shall face the crisis in the next century. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC, indicated last March that the sea level will rise at least one meter by the end of this century. Moreover, Taiwan will be one of the ten countries that suffer the most from the impact. The average rate of sea level rise in Taiwan is approximately 1.8 times faster than that of the world. “The descending ground level and soil erosion will pose serious threat to Taipei, Changhua, Yunlin and Tainan.” said the authority. Once the sea level has risen over one meter, one-tenth of the continent of Taiwan, including Taipei basin, will be covered by sea. Sisy Chen, executive producer of “±2℃”, a documentary film concerning global warming from the Taiwanese point of view, reminds us of the urgency and importance of fighting against global warming.

In this seminar, we had the honor to invite Dr. John Church, a world-renowned oceanographer, to speak for me. Dr. Church was the lead speaker in the session concerning the rising of sea level at the 2009 Climate Change Congress in Copenhagen and is currently working in the Australian Weather and Climate Research and the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre. We believe he can fulfill our thirst for the newest information on global warming and, consequently, inspire us on how to face the truth and protect our beautiful island – Formosa.
