NCKU Appointed Tokyo Tech Professor Emeritus Dr. Masahiro Yoshimura as Visiting Professor

Dr. Masahiro Yoshimura, Professor Emeritus of Materials and Structures Laboratory in Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, visited President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai of National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan; on February 23rd. Accompanied by both Prof. Jiunn-Der Liao and Prof. Chii-Shyang Hwang of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Prof. Yoshimura met with President Lai in the Office of the President.

President Lai praised Prof. Yoshimura for speaking such fluent English and inquired about his life adaptation in Tainan. Prof. Yoshimura expressed, the winter climate in Tainan is very moderate and comfortable, similar to that of Hawaii. With only a few months difference in age, he felt like they are brothers. Prof. Yoshimura not only expressed his admiration for the accomplishments and achievements of both President Lai and NCKU, he also revealed his excitement for the participation in a research project under the 2010 Five-Year Fifty Billions (5Y50B) Project for university advancement. As a member of the research team, he looked forward to applying his knowledge and skills of ceramics to the field of biomedicine and materials.

Prof. Masahiro Yoshimura is appointed as a Distinguished Visiting Professor of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in NCKU for a one-year period from January 1st to December 31st, 2010. During his visiting period in NCKU, Prof. Masahiro Yoshimura will join the Center for Micro/Nano Science and Technology (CMNST), become a member of the Biomedical and Materials Division and participate in the related research. The Center for Micro/Nano Science and Technology, one of the eight research centers of university advancement in NCKU, is established under the financial support of the 5Y50B Project granted from the Ministry of Education, Taiwan. Prof. Liao, also the chairman of the MSE Department, believed the participation of Prof. Yoshimura will elevate the international reputation and research achievements of NCKU.

Chairman Jiunn-Der Liao also mentioned that the Center for Micro/Nano Science and Technology will hold a joint-seminar with Kaohsiung Biomedical Science Park in mid-May, and Prof. Yoshimura will be one of the invited speakers. Prof. Yoshimura is not only the speaker of many upcoming workshops and conferences in the CMNST, he is a member of the biomedical and materials research team as well. Prof. Liao promised, “In near future, artificial ceramic will replace metal completely in the tooth implementation technology and make human teeth look more natural.”

Prof. Masahiro Yoshimura, born in 1942 at Tokyo, Japan, is currently the Professor Emeritus of Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, and a Distinguished Visiting Professor of National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan. He has done research in the Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, U.S., and the Laboratoire de Chimie Appliqee de l’Etat Solide C.E.C.M., France, and has received many awards such as 2006 Tokyo Metropolitan Academic Award, 2007 Research Award, Ministry of Education, Culture & Science, Japan and 2009 Lee Hsun Award, Institute of Metal Research, China.
Prof. Yoshimura is internationally active as well. He was the former President of International Solvothermal and Hydrothermal Association (ISHA), Vice-President of the World Academy of Ceramics, as well as Member of the International Institute of Science of Sintering, Serbia, having published 680 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 3 books and 30 patents, etc.
