NCKU Master Programs Highly Competitive, Especially the Institute of Finance with Merely 2.1% Admission Rate

According to the statistics of Global Views Magazine, NCKU graduates are the most favorite of the enterprise. Graduation guarantees employment. As the trend of undergraduates competing for a spot in the NCKU Master Programs become more apparent, the number of students who registered for graduate entrance examination, including those who signed up for the exam in coming March, has reached over 20,000. Based on the statistics provided by the Registrar Division of the Office of Academic Affairs, the precise number of students who registered for the graduate entrance examination in the academic year 2010 is 20,479, in which the school only admitted 1,888, with an admission rate of merely 9.22%.
Since 2005, the number of students who registered for the NCKU Master Programs examination has exploded to more than 20,000, surpassing that of National Taiwan University and becoming the largest national graduate school examination. Making a comprehensive survey of the registered number, consecutively there were 24,474 in the academic year 2005, 26,311 in the academic year 2006, 25,414 in the academic year 2007, 22,537 in the academic year 2008, 21,344 in the academic year 2009, and 20,479 in the academic year 2010. Despite the academic years 2009 and 2010, the number of students who registered for examination of the rest of the academic years was all larger than that of NTU.
Based on the statistics provided by the Registrar Division, among the 20,479 people who registered, the registered number of students for the Departments of Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Information Engineering, and Business Management all reached over 1,000, with 1,579 in the Department of Electrical Engineering, ranking the first, 1,094 in the Department of Chemical Engineering, the second, and 1,067 in the Department of Information Engineering, the third. Moreover, there were 1,063 students who registered for the Department of Business Administration, 998 for the Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering, 942 for the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and 903 for the Institute of Finance, ranking 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th, consecutively.
Deducting the number of students who applied through admission tests, the total admission rate of the number of students who applied through examination is 9.22%. Out of the 9 Colleges, 92 Master Programs (including Professional Studies Programs), the Institute of Finance is the most competitive, in which 903 candidates are rivaling for the 19 spots, with an admission rate of merely 2.1%. Second to this low admission rate is 2.21% in the Department of Economics. Other low admission rates include 2.67% in the Institute of Information Management, 3.48% in the Department of Business Administration, 3.63% in the Institute of Behavioral Medicine, and 3.66% in the Department of Information Engineering. Also, it is calculated that nearly 20 departments and Institutes have admission rates lower than 5%.
The NCKU Master Programs Examination in the Academic Year 2010 will be held on March 6th and 7th, concurrently in National Taiwan University, Taipei, and National Cheng Kung University, Tainan. According to the Registrar Division in NCKU, the reason for the explosion in the number of students who registered for the exam is because since NCKU was elected as an internationally top-university in 2005 by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, it has been eagerly enhancing its teaching and research equipments, recruiting outstanding professors and research talents, and accumulating a certain amount of international influence; with its research strength and achievements only second to that of National Taiwan University, NCKU is one of the best national universities.
In addition, the ranking of NCKU in various university academic evaluation and survey has significantly risen. Apart from rising to the 262nd place in the 2009 Academic Ranking of World Universities, published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, it has rose to the 307th place in the 2009 Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities of the Higher Education Evaluation & Accreditation Council of Taiwan, second only to that of NTU in Taiwan. Moreover, in evaluation with different fields, the ranking of the field of engineering in NCKU even surpassed that of NTU, ranking the 30th in the world.
Also, according to the paper statistics of the 2009 Essential Science Indicators SM (ESI) of the Thomson Reuters Medical and Technology Group database, the field of material science in NCKU has ranked 52nd in the world. Another academic ranking of research institutions, newly published by Elsevier, NCKU has ranked 19th worldwide in Alternative Energy Distinctive Competency Papers.
