The 2010 Annual Conference of Cultural Studies Association of Taiwan was held by the Cultural Studies Association of Taiwan and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature of National Cheng Kung University in the International Conference Hall and the departmental building of Accountancy from January 9th to 10th. The theme of the annual meeting was “Culture as Creativity and Business: Re-examining the Entanglement of Symbol, Capital, and Power”. Unprecedentedly, more than 600 national and international scholars and guests visited Tainan City Government and attended the meeting.

The vigorous discussion with the scholars has reached the goal of distribution and collection, mutual and cross-field communication. Through the spirit of human speculation and social-science research to achieve multilateral exchange, the power relation and multi-aspects of “Cultural Business”, under the influence of globalization, was re-examined for directing the culture in 21st century.

The 2010 Cultural Studies Association Annual Meeting began under the fresh and golden spring sunlight in Southern Taiwan. The President of National Cheng Kung University, Academician Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, made a speech in the opening ceremony by welcoming all attendees. He pointed out, the annual meeting held by both the Cultural Studies Association and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature served as a platform for international cultural exchange, attracting scholars, researchers and cultural workers who came from different countries and realms and were highly interested in the “Cultural Business”. This cross-field perspective, corresponding to the human approaches of NCKU, is beneficial for the modern citizens to truly witness the phenomenon of the Communist era and Ukiyo culture under the surface through the angle of culture. Simultaneously, it was expected that the irrigation of this cultural studies meeting would further deepen the tradition of reverse thinking as well as the ground of international perspective.

The Chairman of the Cultural Studies Association, Dr. Chih-Hung Wang, also pointed out, cultural creative industries has already become the policy in which the Taiwan official is eagerly motivating and the industries, communities and academia are given high hopes for. However, whether culture is the medicine to recover local development and agglomerate society, the preservation of the multi-vitality and independency, while expanding culture for the livelihood of economy, is a topic worth to consider. The discussion of this topic is the purpose of the annual meeting.

The prelude of the meeting was the examination of East Asian cultural industries, including the observation of the new relationship between symbol, Communism and power, the discussion of the global distribution of the Japanese pop culture and the phenomenon caused by the ideology and practice of cultural industry in South Korea, the preservation of the cultural activities in local communities, and the development of cultural creative industries and cultural action, etc.

Commendably, the meeting approached from different angles this year, attempting to expand the conservations and reflections with higher depth and breadth. On January 9th, there were 5 round table forums in total and 13 thesis group presentations. On the 10th, there were 6 round table forums and 12 thesis group presentations. The discussion consisted of the following topics- first, the critique of cultural strategy: memory, business and justice, second, the cultural track: the history of modernized city and the its contemporary reverse thinking, third, the reverse thinking of the opposing political parties, fourth, the sports culture, fifth, the mobile culture, sixth, the sensation: the emotional culture research, seventh, the sensory culture, eighth, the gaming culture, ninth, the cultural analysis of job and unemployment, tenth, the distortion control, and eleventh, other open topics.

The sub-topics of each meeting have raised the complex entanglement between local communities and global culture, touching upon the elements of gender, race, politic, history, language, memory, etc. The core of the meeting on January 10th, mainly focused on the local culture, when experts from different cultural fields, including Mei-Li Liao of the Flâneur Culture Lab, Chung Chiao of the Assignment Theatre, Koon-Chung Chan of the Hong Kong’s City Howwhy Limited and Taiwan Super Television Organizer, and other cultural workers, shared their thoughts on the reverse thinking and practice of cultural industries in Taiwan.

In fact, through this annual event, the Cultural Studies Association hoped to explore the possibilities of applying culture as “business” on aspects such as cultural strategy, cultural creative industries, arts exhibition, city reform, sports culture, music, travel, technology, sensory, job opportunities, and other related fields to express the social phenomenon from a cross-field angle as well as the strategic usage of the word “culture” on production, package and consumption, based on the current cultural, political and economical circumstances.

“Cultural Business”- culture gives rise to liveliness, inspires business, stimulates creative industries, reflecting the contemporary social phenomenon of the new relationship between symbol, capital and power. With “Cultural Business” as its central theme, the 2010 Cultural Studies Association Annual Meeting expected to infuse culture with imagination and innovation, drawing a multi-dimensional human perspective and concern.
