Inheriting, glorifying the spirit of Cheng-Kung Cheng (Koxinga), the President of National Cheng Kung University, Academician Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, accompanied by the Senior Executive Vice President (SEVP) Da-Hsuan Feng, presented a portrait of Koxinga, 120 cm in height and 70 cm in width, to the College of Liberal Arts, expecting its faculty and students to bring the spirit of Cheng-Kung Cheng into NCKU and explore the related cultural research of this great figure with a attitude of searching for one’s roots and never forgetting one’s origins.

Academician Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, the President of National Cheng Kung University, pointed out, looking back to the historical development and political and economic construction of Taiwan, the recovery of Taiwan by Cheng-Kung Cheng near 350 years ago, where he first landed in 1661 at Luerhmen, Tainan, expelled the Dutch, constructed Taiwan, and expanded the construction to the entire island, is a significant historical landmark. Although the names of each campus, such as Li-Hsing, Kuang-Fu and Tzu-Chiang, signify the historical implications of anti-communism, there is an undeniable fact that the name of National Cheng Kung University has an indelible relationship with Cheng-Kung Cheng.

Academician Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, also stated, the College of Liberal Arts has made outstanding achievements in the research of Min Nan and Cheng-Kung Cheng culture in the past; however, they should take the responsibility of bringing the spirit and historical culture of Cheng-Kung Cheng into NCKU and onto the next level.

SEVP Da-Hsuan Feng believed the act of presenting the Cheng-Kung Cheng portrait to the College of Liberal Arts embodied a great significance. Dr. Feng stressed, as President Lai took the position as the President of National Cheng Kung University, the President has been eagerly promoting the humanistic education, and the spirit of searching for one’s roots and never forgetting one’s origins truly corresponds to his principle of humanistic education.

In response to the expectations from President Lai, the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Dr. Chang-Min Chen, promised to enhance the research of Cheng-Kung Cheng culture on the current basis. The Chairman of the Department of History, Prof. Wing-Sheung Cheng, who specialized in the research of history of Koxinga-Dutch Formosa Era, indicated that the concept of sea power in China originated from Cheng-Kung Cheng. Thus, without neglecting the importance of Cheng-Kung Cheng in the oceanic culture, he devoted himself to its research.

The ceremony of President Lai presenting the portrait of Cheng-Kung Cheng took place at 9:30 am, January 11th, 2010, in the conference room of the College of Liberal Arts, when it was accepted by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Dr. Chang-Min Chen, under the witness of Chairman Yi-Yuan Chen of the Department of Chinese Literature, Chairman Yuan-Guey Chiou of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, Chairman Wing-Sheung Cheng of the Department of History, and dozens of student representative, bearing the responsibility of historical heritage and marking a solemn and momentous ceremony.
