Furthermore, the mutual benefit resulted from academia-industry collaboration could be observed and realized from the joint development and research on new technology and their applications of such fruitful outcomes to daily life of people.

“The 2009 NCHU President’s Forum of the World’s Universities - the University’s Role in the Development of Industry and Society” was hosted and organized by National Chung-Hsing University (NCHU) at Taichung, Taiwan, from October 15 to 16. NCHU, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) and National Sun Yat-Sen University (NSYSU) initiated a T3 alliance, whose aim is to jointly be the engine for economic and intellectual developments for this part of Taiwan. More than one hundred university presidents and representatives from more than 10 countries attended this forum. Dr. Jei-Fu Shaw (蕭介夫), NCHU President, especially mentioned that the center role of a university is not merely a provider of man power and depot of knowledge, but also to bring in welfare and prosperity of the society.

President Lai pointed out during presiding his session that “the mission of a university is to educate, to research and to serve the society and the whole world. As everybody knows from the recent financial tsunami, the role of a university is solving the problem - the economy. Because of the financial tsunami, the educational development of a university becomes more and more important, so does the closer relationship between a university and industry”.

“University must palpably contribute to produce produces future innovators, managers and skilled workers for industry. University must be empowered for development of the industry. The university’s involvement in community drives local prosperity. Hence, this reciprocal relationship between universities and industry is to acknowledge new knowledge and technology innovation that drives economic progress. University is the place for fundamental and applied researches. The problem of industry faced has to be added on the research by the university. But the other thing is that university has responsibility toward the society, i.e. the social responsibility. That is, university must help the society. The industry provides high-technology practical trainings and also the research opportunities to the university. You can see the university and industry are in close relationship. The universities tend to help the industry. But industry and university traditionally have different cultures and infrastructures. The national universities must work properly to solve these problems and to promote this value. This is deemed for all the speakers being here in this afternoon,” said President Lai (賴明詔).

“Take my university - National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) as an example. NCKU has been dedicated extensively to promote academia-industry collaborations. For example, it has established offices for technology development and transfer, such as Research and Services Headquarters, to help researchers and faculty members of NCKU to work with the industry. They also have Licensing Technology and Incubation Center, again, to help the NCKU faculty members to transfer the promising technology to the industry. We also establish our university venture capital fund, and set up the research building at our national science park. We also encourage professors to engage in academia-industry collaborative research projects. The university supports them with flexible criteria for appointments and promotion, salary compensation, etc. We also provided courses for business training for students to teach their creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. This is a future trend with us for the industry,” said President Lai (賴明詔).

“University-industry cooperation established is to have win-win through bilateral collaborations; to bridge new knowledge between academia and industry; to extend and apply academic research results to real life scenario; to realize a knowledge-based economy; and, of course, is to have university more advised and to give better education for students,” said President Lai (賴明詔).

There are more than 100 presidents and vice presidents, as well as top administrative officials and representatives attended to share their working experience of universities with each other. The main issue of this forum is to discuss the university’s role in the development of industry and society. “We are now living in an era of knowledge-based economy; we realize that the role of the universities lies not only in providing human resources and knowledge preservation, but more importantly, they also bear the duty of assisting industrial and social development.” said President Jei-Fu Shaw (蕭介夫) as the president of NCHU and Academia-Industry Consortium for Science Park in Central Taiwan.
