The International Living Lab Workshops 2009—‘Being Smart, Going Green’ to be coming on 10th, October

Tainan, TAIWAN Oct. 9---‘The International Living Lab Workshops 2009’, co-directed by the National Science Council and the Architecture and Building Research Institute, Ministry of the Interior, undertaken by the College of Planning and Design, and hosted by the Center for Technologies of Ubiquitous Computing and Humanity at NCKU (NCKU TOUCH Center), will be organizing three international workshops during October and December, separately focusing on the themes of ‘Interaction Architecture’, ‘Ambient Intelligence’, and ‘Mobile User Experience.’ Keynote Speakers of the three workshops come from noted international research institutes such as the Pasadena and Southern California Institute of Architecture, the Carnegie Mellon University, the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Canterbury, and the National University of Singapore. The workshops, which compose of keynote speeches and project practices, are to be carried through with the thought of open innovation with an aim to discover future needs and applications of prospective smart living technologies, and in the expectation of hooking up to the world trends.

The ‘Living Lab’ method stresses the applications of smart living technology should not merely exist in the experimental phase in laboratories. Instead, the related applications should be carried into user experiences of the real-life scenarios so that user lifestyles will be observed, unsatisfied demands will be discovered, and more humanized products/services will be offered. The opening ceremony of the foremost Living Lab International Workshop will be at 10 o’clock in the lecture hall (B1) of the Department of Architecture. On the occasion, both the chief director of NCKU TOUCH Center, Janfa Yang, and the Dean of the College of Planning and Design, Feng-Tyan Lin will be invited to deliver an address. The series of workshops continued for 5 days, from October 10th to 14th. In the foremost workshop, the ex-host of Kinetic Design Group in MIT Media Lab, incumbent assistant professor in the Pasadena and Southern California Institute of Architecture, Michael Fox will served as the keynote speaker of the following speeches: (1) time: 14:00~17:00, 10th October; subject: Kinetics & Biomimetics, (2) time: 10:00~12:30, 11th October; subject: Theory & History of Interactive Architecture, (3) time: 10:00~12:30, 12th, October; subject: Robotics & Embedded Computation in Architecture. Besides the international keynote speeches, during the workshops, opportunities are also given to participants to discuss as multidisciplinary teams, to achieve stage missions, and to virtually practice the prospective technology projects. On the final day of the foremost workshop, October 14th, each team will be presented their finished projects.

The second workshop of the ‘The International Living Lab Workshops 2009’ will be held in November. Under the subject of Ambient Intelligence, Mar Gross, the vice Dean of the Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture, and Ellen Do, the adjunct associate professor of Georgia Institute of Technology will both be invited to address on the applications such as design method, robotics module, and interactive interface. The third workshop will be held in December under the subject of Mobile User Experience. Mark Billinghurst, the host of New Zealand Human Interface Technology Laboratory, and Henry Been-Lim Duh, professor of College of Interaction and Media Research in National University of Singapore will address on topics including 3D interface, human-computer interaction, and mobile computing. Also, through out the workshops, project practice opportunities will be offered to participants to learn how the prospective technologies can be developed through living labs overseas, and to accumulate the R&D energy of smart living industry in Taiwan.

With the vision of ‘Being Smart, Going Green,’ The International Living Lab Workshops 2009 plan to draw up the prospect of intelligent Taiwan, integrated with the living lab methodology, to accomplish the three goals of multidisciplinary integration, open innovation, and international interflow. Moreover, through the workshops, NCKU TOUCH Center expects to act as the pioneer to discover future Taiwan lifestyles by conducting virtual project practices on real experimental fields, and to explore possibilities of future smart living.

About NCKU TOUCH Center
