NCKU Museum Displays Two Exhibitions Themed on NCKU Ecosystem and Charles Darwin
Tainan, TAIWAN, April 23, 2009 --- The National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) is currently showcasing species ecology of NCKU as well as the Charles Darwin's legend and networks. Exhibition titled "Eco-NCKU-a city green island" is to arouse public awareness to ecosystem in NCKU campus while the other exhibition entitled "Darwin Now" is to commemorate Charles Darwin's bicentenary and 150 years since his book, "Origin of Species" was firstly published. The NCKU Museum on April 23 inaugurated the exhibitions with many renowned participants, such as Dr. M.C. Michael Lai, NCKU President, Mayor Tain-Tsair Hsu of Tainan City, officials from British Council Taiwan and National Science Council, as well as Professor Sue-Joan Chang, Dean of College of Bioscience and Biotechnology. The two exhibitions will run through the end of this December and June 20th, respectively.
In the opening ceremony, President Lai of NCKU expressed his gratitude to Department of Life Science for their contribution to this exhibition. "An eco-friendly campus is a major factor to the balance of ecosystem. It can help integrate the natural environment to metropolitan one", said President Lai.
President Lai claimed that building eco-friendly environment required interdisciplinary collaboration, including engineering, biology, social science and medical science with the aim to resolve human environment issues as well as to preserve biodiversity. "Through this exhibition, we human beings can think about what efforts we can make to improve the environment", said President Lai.
The "Eco-NCKU-a city green island" exhibition has many topics, including (a) what is habitat island; (b) habitat island in different scales; (c) islands in a city; (d) habitat islands in a city; (e) the fragmented habitat islands; (f) road kill; (g) animal crossing; (h) ecological corridors; (i) the secrets of plant seed dispersal; (j) mosquito theater; (k) the vulnerable island; (l) a festival of wild NCKU; (m) NCKU walk of fame; (n) hide & seek; (o) winners of the photographic contest; (p) the beauty of leaves; and (q) leaf shadows.
The "Darwin Now" exhibition, sponsor by British Council and other museums libraries, universities as well as research institutes, present an educational feast themed on Darwin, including exhibitions, 50 or so popular science lectures, drama performances, teachers' workshops, outdoor life camps, video shows, games, student summits and so on to help everyone get a taste in Darwin from diversified approaches.
Dr. Hong-Shen Yan, the Museum Director said that "Darwin Now" explores Darwin’s life, especially on how he came up with his ground-breaking theory. "Still relevant today, Darwin's ground-breaking yet controversial theory has influenced not only evolution and biology, but also history, theology, philosophy, psychology, geology, economics, etc.," Dr. Yan added.
