TAINAN, TAIWAN (April 2, 2009) – To strengthen and broaden the communication and collaboration between National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) and the State of Indiana of the United States of America, Mr. Jeff T. Wang, the Director of the State of Indiana Taiwan Office, has a one-day visit at the NCKU on March 31 to meet President Michael M.C. Lai of NCKU. On behalf of the State of Indiana, Mr. Wang sincerely welcomed President Lai's upcoming visit to Purdue University in late April. Mr. Wang said that NCKU and Purdue University has many similar niches and shared histories and he expected more cooperation items can be seen and realized between two sides in the foreseeable future.

In response with the query about the cooperation items between NCKU and Purdue University from Director Wang, President Lai said that the current cooperation between two sides mainly focus on five areas, including bio-energy production, water resource management, materials, medical engineering and infrastructure on transportation.

According to President Lai, whose uncle was one of the first NCKU’s exchange professors to Purdue University, Purdue University had made great contribution to NCKU’s transformation in such era. After about 5 decades, President Lai is retracing the histories between two schools and making impressive connection. President Lai said that there are many similarities between two schools, for example, among USA early talents in mechanical engineering, one out of ten graduated from Purdue University, as such, among Taiwanese outstanding talents in mechanical engineering, one out of ten graduated from NCKU.

Director Wang acknowledged the viewpoint of President Lai and said that not only Purdue University, but also the State of Indiana is similar with Taiwan on the industrial development. “Both started from agricultural-based societies, and developed into industrial-based societies, further into advanced technology-based societies, such as chemical engineering and bio-technology”, said Director Wang. “Indiana was the first state to establish a sister-state relationship with Taiwan and was also the first state to establish a trade office in Taiwan”. The State government is craving for the cooperation and communication with Taiwan with the aim to enhance urbanization and globalization of the State of Indiana”, added Director Wang. He also expressed enthusiasm to help bridge the communication between NCKU and other states in USA since he also serves as President of American State Offices Association.

President Lai claimed that NCKU’s efforts on globalization have been greatly invested recently. The globalization can be seen on the academic visits from 7 Nobel Laureates, who had face-to-face discussion with NCKU faculties and students.

Director Wang said he has been impressed by the special exhibition on Purdue-Formosa (NCKU) Project in the U.S. Aid Period” held by NCKU Museum and invited such the showcasing in Purdue University. He is also inviting the Governor of the State of Indiana to visit NCKU. Director Wang again welcomes President Lai’s visit to Purdue and the State of Indiana in April for more substantial collaborations and exchange of visits. Director Wang also wishes President Lai to have any possible meeting with Taiwanese compatriots living in the State of Indiana during his tight schedule in visiting Purdue to look for more collaboration between two sides.
