Tainan, TAIWAN, Jan. 13, 2009 --- The UTech Marine Engineering Technology Lectureship announced the 2008 Award winners on Jan. 13th. The Senior Executive Vice President (SEVP) of NCKU and the Professor of Department of Hydraulic & Ocean Engineering, Dr. Hwung-Hweng Hwung (黃煌煇), was honored with the Award of the UTech-Marine-Engineering-Technology (UTMET) Chair Professorship, along with Dr. Tai-Wen Hsu (許泰文), the Distinguished Professor and Chair of Department of Hydraulic & Ocean Engineering, who was also awarded with the UTech-Marine-Engineering-Technology Honorary Scholar. This UTMET lectureship was established with four million New Taiwanese Dollars (NTD), approximately 120 thousand USD, endowed by Utech Engineering Consultants Co.

The NCKU SEVP Hwung-Hweng Hwung will be granted with 800 thousands NTD annually for three consecutive years, while Professor Tai-Wen Hsu will receive an annual grant of 400 thousands NTD for next three years.

The awarding ceremony was held at International Conference Hall in the NCKU Library with Academician M.C. Lai, NCKU President and Mr. Chi-Chi, Chen, Chairman of Utech Engineering Consultants Co., attending this ceremony.

NCKU President Lai showed gratitude to the endowment by Utech Engineering Consultants Corporation, which is deemed with specialization in construction projects in waterway, port, coastal and ocean engineering. The establishment of the lectureship not only showed the recognition to NCKU, which has been regarded as in a top tier in research on hydraulics and ocean, but also generated positive effects on future industrial development.

According to Mr. Chi-Chi, Chen, Chairmen of Utech Engineering Consultants Co., knowledge-based economy is of the future trend. The collaboration between industry and academia can provide customers with a more economic, safer, and faster service. “We expect to have greater contribution to industry & academia collaboration as well as future national plans on port construction,” Mr. Chen added. Mr. Chen also praised two professors, who both are excellent researchers in oceanic engineering and have successfully assisted in completion of major nationwide port construction projects.

One of the recipients, NCKU SEVP Hwung-Hweng Hwung was thankful to Utech and expected more positive responses stimulated by Utech’s endowment. “The mission of modern oceanic engineering is to comply with environmental concerns”, said Professor Hwung. He also expected a better design in port and coastal construction projects, which can certainly make Taiwan more beautiful as Ilha Formosa.

Professor Tai-Wen Hsu was acclaimed for his pioneering perspectives in promoting oceanic construction into global stage. “It is expected that NCKU faculty and facilities on oceanic engineering can be greatly promoted and able to participate more foreign construction projects”, said Professor Hsu, who promised to devote his efforts to oceanic engineering when receiving the award.

Having been long devoted to the research in wave mechanics and having received many internationally renowned achievements, NCKU SEVP Hwung-Hweng Hwung, also a Professor of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering, started his academic career as an associate professor in NCKU right after he was conferred with his PhD in Civil Engineering in 1981. He has been long dedicated to researches in oceanic engineering and, since then, has generated many fruitful results that were published in many internationally renowned journals such as Proceedings of Royal Society, Series A, Physics of Fluids, Measurement of Science Technology, Wave Motion, and Ocean Engineering. His research of non-linear wave modulation was particularly well-known and thus made him as a leading role in international academic community.

Professor Hwung has won an outstanding research award from Ministry of Education (MOE) in 2002 with his research project, “The Characteristics of Nonlinear Wave Transformation on Sloping Bottoms”. This research award from MOE was considered as the only national research excellence in civil engineering. His excellent research achievements have been published in many prestigious journals. Besides, his excellent performances also drew the attention of some professors from some prestigious American universities, such as MIT, John Hopkins University, Cornell University, and Ohio Stated University. Professor Hwung also collaborates with The Academy of Sciences of Russia is also in wave mechanics, which as well reflects his contribution in raising the academic status of Taiwan to the world level.

Since 1981 when he was appointed as the Director of the Hydraulics Laboratory, he has been highly acclaimed for many of his contributions to the development of local coastal and oceanic construction projects as well as the researches in the related issues. He has been commissioned to work on many collaborative projects which have generated in total the revenues of about $3 billion NTD. The results that his research generated have resolved many tricky problems in oceanic engineering in Taiwan.

Professor Hwung has won numerous awards for his excellent research outcomes and design projects in engineering, such as the Award of Outstanding Engineering Professor of Chinese Institute of Engineers (1994), the Award of Hydraulic Engineering Contribution in Taiwan (2005), the Honorary Scholar Award of K.T. Li (2007), and the 2006 Outstanding Contribution Award, Executive Yuan (2007). He has also been recognized as the Fellow of Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in 2008.

Another recipient, Professor Tai-Wen Hsu, with research foci on wave turbulence model, Bragg scattering of water waves, numerical simulation of near-shore hydrodynamics, WWM wave model, two-phase flow, RANS turbulence model, and management of coastal environment.
