NCKU Signed New Partnership with Tübingen
Tainan, TAIWAN, Nov. 21, 2008---The College of Social Science of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in Taiwan and European Research Center on Contemporary Taiwan (ERCCT) of University of Tübingen in Germany have finalized a partnership agreement and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), covering student and faculty exchange and research collaboration on contemporary Taiwan studies. A seminar talking about details of student exchange presented by the Chair Professor Gunter Schubert, the representative of ERCCT was also held after the signing ceremony.
The MOU was signed on Friday, 21st July, by Professor Hweng-Hwung Hwung, Senior Executive Vice President and the head of College of Social Science of NCKU and Chair Professor Gunter Schubert from ERCCT.
Professor Hweng-Hwung Hwung expressed fully support to the partnership built on both and expected the students exchange and more research cooperation between NCKU and ERCCT. In the signing ceremony, Professor Hwung promised to reserve at least 4 fellowship grants for this cooperation in order to support outstanding research projects from College of Social Science.
According to Professor Gunter Schubert, visiting scholars to the ERCCT will be provided with expenses for international and domestic travel to Tübingen and, its amount depending on budget conditions, with a daily stipend to cover their living expenses and expenses for accommodation.
Based on the MOU, NCKU will provide ERCCT Visiting Fellows at NCKU with an official affiliation to College of Social Science, office space and access to all existing research facilities, such as libraries, computer networks in order to assist the visiting scholars in conducting their research in Taiwan. NCKU also promised to name a tutor who should help the ERCCT Visiting Fellow in carrying out his/her research, e.g. by establishing contacts with scholars and academic institutions related or relevant to the ERCCT Visiting Fellow’s field of research and by integrating the ERCCT Visiting Fellow in the academic activities at NCKU.
The main objective of the ERCCT is to promote empirical research on contemporary Taiwan, especially at the PhD and post-doctor levels, as well as to encourage students to interact with established Taiwan scholars with the aim to identify interesting research fields, develop feasible research strategies, apply suitable theories, clarify and finetune methodology, critically assess research results and prepare for publications in internationally renowned publishing houses.
In pursue of these objectives, ERCCT functions as following: 1. serving as a platform for highly qualified European and Taiwanese student who conduct empirical research on contemporary Taiwan, especially in the realm of politics and law, economics, society and cross-strait relations; 2. supporting empirical research in Taiwan by establishing close relations to first-class academic institutions and jointly operating tutorial system for those students conducting fieldwork in Taiwan; 3. inviting visiting scholars from Taiwan and Europe to give talks or lecture courses and take part in the center’s “Taiwan Colloquium”; 4.gradually building a comprehensive library and resource base on contemporary Taiwan studies with a focus on politics, law, economics, society and cross-strait relations; 5. administering a special ERCCT website that will also include an e-paper series on topics related to contemporary Taiwan; 6. helping to channel book manuscripts on contemporary Taiwan stemming from research done by ERCCT Fellows to established international publishing houses.
ERCCT in University of Tübingen was initiated from Chair of Greater China Studies in 2003, which was fund-supported by the CCK Foundation to focus on language and culture at first.
