Fellow of Royal Society speaks at NCKU and accepts award
TAINAN, TAIWAN, Nov. 17 – Dr. Don Grierson, the Fellow of Royal Society in 2002 was presented the first ever Academician Shang-Fan Yang Memorial Award.
The award is in honor of the late Shang Fa Yang (楊祥發) – who was one of the most acclaimed plant scientists in the world.
Academician and the NCKU President, Dr. Michael, M.C Lai presented Dr. Grierson with the award at the NCKU sponsored conference titled “Control of Ethylene Synthesis and Action.”
President Lai presented the Shang-Fan Yang Memorial Award, in honor of Dr. Grierson’s former colleague and friend, Shang-Fan Yang, who was passed away last year.
Dr. Grierson spoke very kindly of his good friend and colleague Mr. Yang and reminisced about his great character and strong work ethic. Dr. Grierson then gave a seminar pertaining to the contribution understanding and controlling Ethylene, to a crowded conference hall of students and professors.
Dr. Grierson’s speech talked about the Biological and Environmental Factors and the importance of Ethylene. He also described the “Yang Cycle” a concept originally presented by Shang Fa Yang.
About Dr. Don Grierson
Dr. Don Grierson attended the University of East Anglia, where he graduated with Upper Second Class Honours in Biological Sciences in 1967, and obtained his PhD in Plant Science from the University of Edinburgh in 1972. In 1999 he was awarded a DSc for his research at Nottingham.
Dr. Grierson became Professor of Plant Physiology in 1986 and served as Head of Department of Physiology and Environmental Science (1988-91 and 1992-94), Head of the Plant Sciences Division (1997-2002) and Head of the new School of Biosciences based at the Sutton Bonington Campus (2000-02).
Dr. Grierson has published over 150 research articles and given more than 200 invited research talks on Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology to Universities and national and international conferences. He is particularly well known for his research on gene identification, regulation and silencing and the use of this knowledge in genetic modification of plants. His research has been supported by over 50 competitive grants. In recent years he has also contributed to the public debate on genetically modified foods.
Dr. Grierson was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Biology in 1985 and became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2000. He was awarded a Research Medal by the Royal Agricultural Society of England in 1990 for outstanding research in agriculture. In 2000 he was awarded the degree of honorary Doctor of Science by the National Polytechnic of Toulouse, and was made OBE for services to plant gene regulation in the same year. He received the Bertebos prize from the Royal Swedish Academy for Agriculture and Forestry for pioneering research on plant biotechnology in 2001.
Dr. Grierson was a member of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council Investigating Gene Function Board, Chairman of the Sainsbury Laboratory Council until 2003, having been a member of Council since 1994, and was a member of Council of the British Nutrition Foundation (1997-2000). He was Chair of the BBSRC Visiting Group to the John Innes Centre (1997), and a member of the Higher Education Funding Council Research Assessment Panel for Agriculture, Food and Veterinary Science (1996).
About Shang Fa Yang
Shang Fa Yang (楊祥發) was born in 1932 in Taiwan. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in agricultural chemistry at the National Taiwan University. After completing his master's degree, he went to the United States and completed his doctoral degree in plant biochemistry from Utah State University.
Shang Fa Yang (楊祥發) was an acclaimed plant scientist and a professor at the University of California, Davis. After completing his PhD, he conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, Davis, New York Medical School and University of California, San Diego. After completing his postdoctoral research, he joined the faculty of University of California, Davis in 1966.
Shang Fa Yang received several awards and honors for his research. In 1990, he was inducted into the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. In 1991, he was awarded the Wolf Prize in Agriculture "for his remarkable contributions to the understanding of the mechanism of biosynthesis, mode of action and applications of the plant hormone, Ethylene."In 1992, he was awarded the American Society of Horticultural Science Outstanding Research Award.
