International Student Orientation Highlights Diversity

The Division of International Student Affairs in the National Cheng Kung University launched a three-day orientation for international students, including campus tour, information sessions and Tainan City tour from 10th to 12th of September to help incoming international undergraduate and graduate students get acquainted with the campus and culture of Taiwan.

The NCKU President, Academician Michael, M.C. Lai, encouraged all international students to experience different cultures, to expose to various learning environment and to meet fellows from different countries, in addition to gaining knowledge from the classroom. The President also expressed his understandings to the feeling of being an international student when he earned his PhD degree at University of California - Berkeley 40 years ago.

Mr. Sander, one of international students from Estonia and with his major in IMBA program at NCKU, said that people in Tainan are friendly, which makes him feel comfortable as a foreigner. Ms. Mania, Mr. Sander’s friend, being scheduled to study in Chinese program, said that the main goal of coming to NCKU is to experience foreign life and to realize Taiwanese cultures.

Ms. Aullya, who comes from Indonesia and majors in Environmental Engineering, said that the reason why she chose NCKU is that NCKU is the top in the field of environmental engineering. Galuh and Lisa, friends of Ms. Aullya and with major in IMBA, express the feeling of safety because Taiwan is near to their home country. What the only thing they worry about is the flavor and food in Taiwan is quite different from theirs.

The number of newly admitted international students reached the ever highest peak to 190 people from 45 countries all around the world, including Bangladesh, Belize, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Canada, Columbia, Czech, Dominica, El Salvador, Estonia, Gambia, Germany, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Kenya, Kiribati, South Korea, Malawi, Myanmar, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Malaysia, Mexico, Mongolia, Netherland, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippine, Poland, Russia, Saint Lucia, Slovenia, Solomon, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States and Vietnam. Students from Indonesia are the majority with 29 people, followed by 24 from Malaysia and 23 from Vietnam.
