The Department of Materials Science and Engineering of the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) held an International Symposium on Materials for Enabling Nanodevices (ISMEN) featuring talks by three Academicians, experts from NCKU, UCLA and elsewhere from September 3rd to 5th.
The symposium today (9/3) ran from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., starting with welcoming remarks from the Academician and the NCKU president, Dr. Michael, M.C Lai.
Academician Michael, M.C. Lai, the president of NCKU especially attributed the success of this symposium to the support from the Ministry of Education, the National Science Council (NSC), the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research of the USA, the Asian Office of Aerospace Research and Development of the USA, the Applied Materials Inc., Taiwan, and the Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc.
The keynote speakers of the ISMEN included two Academicians, Dr. Mow-Kuen, Wu, the former Minister of the NSC, who spoke on Materials Research and Nanotechnology, and Dr. Lih-Juann, Chen, the Deputy Minister of the NSC, who spoke on In situ Ultrahigh Vacuum Transmission Electron Microscope Investigations of Nanostructures on Silicon. Professor Yang Yang from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and Dr. Jim C. Chang from the North Carolina State University were also invited as keynote speakers. The symposium on the 4th and the 5th will feature lectures on two main topics: Nano-Imprinting and Flexible Electronics and Nano-contact and Nano-Interconnect.
According to the President Lai, the idea of the ISMEN symposium was first initiated around two years ago, when the NCKU delegation visited the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at UCLA. Professor King-Ning Tu, also the Academician of the Academia Sinica, of the UCLA brought up the idea of building a “platform” for materials scientists of universities in Taiwan and the west coast of the USA. After a year of discussion and planning, the MSE department at NCKU decided to expand this idea and globalizes it to an international conference. “Nano-science and nano-device are the future trend for world science” added the President Lai, who expected the success and productivity of the symposium.
