Experts in creativity and technology from Center for Technologies of Ubiquitous Computing and Humanity (TOUCH center)of National Cheng Kung University and Media Lab of Massachusetts Institute of Technology will convene at the NCKU, located in Tainan city with rich cultural heritage this Thursday (8/14) for Nightmarket Workshop and Symposium on Smart Living Technologies, Cross-Disciplinary Education, and Sustainable Culture, an event highlighting how arts and technologies can work together to enrich people’s lives and create a human-centric technologies for human beings.
“Smart living technologies have become the goal of technological research and industrial development with the growing trends towards digitalization and cross-disciplinary collaboration,” said Professor Dr. Jar-Ferr Yang from Electrical Engineering and the director of the TOUCH center.
The event, held August 14~18 in NCKU and cultural spots of Tainan city, including one-day symposium themed on smart living technologies, cross-disciplinary collaboration and human-centric technologies, followed by three-days workshop for street experience combined with arts and technologies. All engagement and performance in these days will be presented in photos and movie clips on the 18th with the grand opening of the TOUCH center at NCKU.
The Nightmarket annual workshop, launched and organized from 2006 by Jackie Lee, doctoral student of MIT Media Lab and NCKU Architecture Institute has become the crucial and cross-disciplinary activity for youth creativity combining with arts and technologies. It is also the first time to be held with Symposium on Smart Living Technologies, Cross-disciplinary Education, and Sustainable culture, co-hosted by the NCKU TOUCH center and MIT Media Lab. This year, the nightmarket workshop will be themed on “smart living, street experience” with the focus on “smart living technologies” and development of interactive human-centric environment. The aim of this workshop is to put innovative research into practice.
The Professor of Architecture and the TOUCH center CEO, Dr. Taysheng Jeng noted that this event provides NCKU students a great opportunity to contact with their counterparts in MIT with global and innovative views. It is expected that through creativity and smart-living technology development driven by human needs, Taiwan industries could be upgraded to “created in Taiwan” from “made in Taiwan” as a pioneer instead of a follower.
About the MIT Media Lab
The MIT Media Lab applies an unorthodox research approach to envision the impact of emerging technologies on everyday life-technologies that promise to fundamentally transform our most basic notions of human capabilities. Unconstrained by traditional disciplines, Lab designers, engineers, artists, and scientists work atelier-style in some 30 research groups conducting more than 400 projects that range from neuroengineering, to how children learn, to developing the city car of the future. Lab researchers foster a unique culture of learning by doing, developing technologies that empower people of all ages, from all walks of life, in all societies, to design and invent new possibilities for themselves and their communities. About the Center for Technologies of Ubiquitous Computing and Humanity (TOUCH center)
Sponsored by National Science Council (NSC), the TOUCH, the regional integrated center for the development of living technologies, establishes integrated platform for shared smart living technologies in connection with relevant schools and institutes. With the core concept of human-centric, creativity and intellectual, experts from various fields of electrical engineering, information, designing, mechanical engineering, medical and psychological areas, create human-centric and creativity-driven environment in the use of sensor and perceptual systems and artificial intellectual technologies. The TOUCH center also provides base for living technology industries by accelerating the collaboration of industry-academy and inter-institutes with cross-disciplinary experts.
About Night market workshop
The Nightmarket worhop, launched and organized from 2006 by Jackie Lee, doctoral student of MIT Media Lab and NCKU Architecture Institute, is the first time to be held with Symposium on Smart Living Technologies, Cross-disciplinary Education, and Sustainable culture. The Nightmarket workshop 2006 drew the public attention on interdisciplinary perspective and skills, followed by the Nightmarket workshop 2007, which further the spirit of 2006 and was featured by the theme: fusion – embraces notions of cultural, disciplinary, and perspectival hybridity. Students and researchers formed four different groups, including Group 1-Narration, Group 2-Urban Playground, Group 3-Urban Dynamics, and Group 4-Urban Music.
