UNESCO Heritage Protection Carried Out by NCKU
(TAINAN, Taiwan, August 1, 2008) --- Antigua Guatemala historical site protection group, led by Dr. Min-Fu Hsu, the Dean of College of Planning and Design at the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), is the first and the only group ever in Taiwan to join the protection project for world cultural heritage designated by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). One of the protection processes has been completed and recorded by resident personnel and researchers and the results will be collected as educational materials for protecting domestic relics and historical site.
The Capuchinas Museum, restored under this project, was opened to public at July 25th, 2008. This Museum, displaying the Spanish colonial and prior-colonial sculptures and paintings which were collected by the National Protection Council of Antigua Guatemala, highlights the contribution from Taiwan and NCKU in Chinese, English and Spanish languages.
According to Dr. Hsu, the project, carried out by NCKU, is a diplomatic aid and cross-department affair, coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Council of Cultural Affairs. This collaboration, receiving funding of around 7 hundred thousand dollars from the Executive Yuan, provides NCKU academic communication with Guatemala in Central America as well as relationship with the University of San Carlos in Guatemala. Dr. Hsu expresses confidence to this project and adding that the project of historical site protection will strengthen the understanding for working model of world cultural heritage protection and deepen the confidence for our country to carry out the international collaboration project based on the experience of Antigua Guatemala heritage preservation. All the preservation process will be recorded and collected for diplomatic propaganda to feature Taiwan’s hardworking and achievement on world cultural activities.
Antigua Guatemala was ever the capital during the period of Spanish colonization in the 16th century with the current population of around 30 thousands and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Antigua Guatemala Cultural Heritage Protect project is the first cultural aids with the aim to launch new model of collaboration with diplomatic alliance.
Introduction of Antigua
Antigua, the capital of the Captaincy-General of Guatemala, was founded in the early 16th century. Built 1,500 m above sea-level, in an earthquake-prone region, it was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1773 but its principal monuments are still preserved as ruins. In the space of under three centuries the city, which was built on a grid pattern inspired by the Italian Renaissance, acquired a number of superb monuments.
About National Cheng Kung University
