Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education Delegation Visits NCKU

Delegation of the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education visited NCKU on December 9th, 2022.
The delegation led by the deputy minister of Education and Science of Poland, Tomasz Rzymkowski, visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) with representatives of Department of International and Cross-strait Education of Ministry of Education on December 9th, 2022.
The delegation met with Dr. Huey-Jen Su(蘇慧貞), the President of NCKU, and NCKU faculty to discuss key areas in both Poland and Taiwan society. During the meeting, the Polish delegation introduced the National Copernican Program and Copernican Academy and invited President Su to serve as a member in the Medical Committee of Copernican Academy for establishing a foundation in academic cooperation between Taiwan and Poland.

Rzymkowski looked forward to more student exchange programs between Polish schools and NCKU in the future.
Rzymkowski looked forward to more student exchange programs between Polish universities and NCKU in the future and was glad to see Poland is cooperating with Taiwan, a country with forefront development in semiconductor industry. He hoped to deepen mutual understanding between Taiwanese and Polish students through learning about Taiwan's history and culture, and creating more the possibility for both countries.

Górski thought it would be a great honor to invite Su to serve as a Medical Committee Member of Copernicus Academy.
The Polish delegation includes Tomasz Rzymkowski, the Deputy Minister of Education and Science for Poland; Grzegorz Kazimierz Górski, Chief Advisor to the Deputy Minister of Education and Science and President of Jagiellonian University; and Remigiusz Kopoczek, Vice President for Communications of the Łukasiewicz Research Network.
During the meeting, Górski noted that the Copernicus Academy would launch soon and he noticed that many Taiwanese students in Poland study in the medical field, therefore it would be a great honor to invite President Su, a representative from the medical and environmental health field, to serve as a member of Medical Committee in Copernicus Academy.

Kopoczek was Interested in academic exchanges with Taiwan in the fields including microelectronics, optoelectronics, aerospace, and materials science.
In order to introduce NCKU's Shalun Smart Green Energy Science City and its active role in supporting the country's core strategic industries to Polish guests, NCKU arrange a presenting section for the faculty members to introduce the current developments in key areas such as academia-industry collaboration and talent cultivation in healthcare, semiconductors, space, and quantum technology. The presenters including Chuang Woei-Jer (莊偉哲) the Senior Vice President & Director General of IHQ, Wang Hsiao-Wen (王筱雯) the Vice President for the Office of International Affairs, Lo Yu-Lung (羅裕龍) the Associate Dean of Academy of Innovative Semiconductor and Sustainable Manufacturing (AISSM), Chen Tse-Ming (陳則銘) the Deputy Director of the Center for Quantum Frontier of Research and Technology (QFort), and Yang Yi (楊毅) the professor of the department of Physics.
Górski explained that the National Copernican Program and Copernican Academy was approved by the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, in March of 2022. This program aims to increase Poland's scientific competitiveness and international recognition, cultivate young talent, and support scientists.
The Copernicus Academy is composed by six councils, including the Council of Astronomy, the Council of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the Council of Medicine, the Council of Economics and Management, the Council of Philosophy and Theology, the Council of Law, and the Council of Copernicus Prize Winners.

According to President Su, NCKU has had a lot of exchanges with Polish higher education institutions. For example, she participated in the 2022 EAIE Conference and Exhibition and visited Poland to explore Taiwan-Poland cooperation and the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences was invited to speak at the 2022 SATU Biennial Conference in NCKU. Su mentioned that NCKU focuses on combining academic research with practical engineering in different fields, with top achievements in aerospace, quantum research, and semiconductors, NCKU hopes to continue working with international partners to contribute to sustainable development in the future.
NCKU has cooperated with Polish institutions of higher education, such as Jagiellonian University, Technical University of Lodz, Poznan University of Technology, Warsaw University of Life Sciences, Polish Aviation Museum, Karol Adamiecki University of Economics in Katowice, and Polish Academy of Sciences, and Academy of Sciences.
To date, there are 2 Polish students studying in NCKU. In the past decade, there have been 9 Polish students graduated from NCKU. In the past 7 years, a total of 54 NCKU students have studied in Poland, mostly as exchange students. Meanwhile, 28 Poland exchange students have come to NCKU, mainly from Technical University of Lodz and Warsaw University of Life Sciences. These Poland exchange students are primarily studying at Jagiellonian University, Technical University of Lodz, and Cracow University of Economics.
