2017 International Conference on Regulatory Approaches for Fostering Innovation in Drugs and Medical Devices kicked off at NCKU yesterday at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, with over 220 professors and experts from the Netherlands, USA, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan.

According to Conference Chairman Dr. Fong-Chin Su, to enhance interactions of biomedical engineering professionals, encourage cross-fertilization and novel insights into questions relevant to biomedical engineering, the conference is open for people who are interested in medical devices innovation.

Participants in the two-day conference sit together to identify the technical trends and discuss the practical challenges encountered and the solutions adopted.

Dr. Su said, we hope the symposium will not only establish a strong biomedical
engineering network but also inspire the participants reach beyond their
own areas of specialization and benefit from the lectures and discussion during this
conference.

The themes of the conference include ICT or Biomedical Engineering, Innovative Medicine and Innovative Medical Device, Precision Medicine, Wearable Device based on Health Promotion, Nanotechnology and 3D Printing.

Two keynote speakers were invited to share their research.

Arthur G. Erdman, P.E., the Richard C. Jordan Professor and a Morse Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, was invited to give a keynote talk on March 30.

In his talk titled “Transforming regulatory approval through innovations in modeling and simulation,” Erdman talked about how the changing of regulatory approval is encouraging and at the same time challenging.

Erdman, an expert in mechanical design, bioengineering and product design, also talked about the Medical Devices Center in which he serves as the Director and the programs they do in the innovation and medical device development.

Dr. Albert J. Shih, Professor of Mechanical Engineering & Biomedical Engineering in University of Michigan, gave a talk on devices for atheretomy today and he said, “heart attack and stroke are two major cause of death in developed and developing countries and there’s a need for a device to open the plaque to restore the blood flow.”

His talk covered the study and analytical modeling for two common atherectomy devices with high speed diamond grinding wheels.

Shih’s research and teaching focus are in biomedical design and manufacturing the application of advanced design and manufacturing technology to advance medical device, healthcare operations, and patient safety.
