NCKU, China Steel jointly set up lab to develop next-generation steel

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) and China Steel Corporation, a Taiwan-based company principally engaged in the manufacture and sales of steel products, set up the first on-campus laboratory underlying the industry-academia collaboration, the university revealed today.

An unveiling ceremony was held on the morning of March 28 to mark the milestone of the long-lasting partnership.

NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su and China Steel Corporation President Jih-Gang Liu on behalf of their organization respectively co-presided over the ceremony.

The Department of Material Sciences at NCKU is the cradle of talents of steel and metals industry in Taiwan.

The university and China Steel Corporation particularly built a long-lasting partnership and the results in industry-academia collaboration had been very fruitful.

The university will take part in the future development of China Steel in technology research and development, especially in developing the next-generation steel and metals.

The China Steel Laboratory, located in the first floor of the new building of material sciences, is divided into four sections - grinding and polishing, chemical corrosion experiments, light microscopes, and precision laboratories.

China Steel Corporation is the largest integrated steel maker in Taiwan.

Its main steel mill is located in Siaogang District, Kaohsiung. The corporation and its sister companies are administrated under the CSC Group. According to the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI), China Steel is the 23rd largest steel producer in the world in 2016
