UCAR President Antonio Busalacchi to speak at NCKU on March 29

Dr. Antonio (Tony) J. Busalacchi, president of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) since August 2016, will give a special lecture on the afternoon of March 29 at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan.

Dr. Busalacchi has a distinguished career in the geosciences; extensive experience in management of academic, laboratory, and government programs; and a broad knowledge of the community.

Prior to his appointment at UCAR, he served as director of the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) and as a professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science at the University of Maryland.

Dr. Busalacchi’s lecture titled “Earth System Prediction in 21st Century” will be held at 3:30-5:00 pm, March 29, in the Third Lecture Room of the International Conference Hall, Kuang-Fu Campus.

Dr. Busalacchi has held numerous scientific leadership positions over the last three decades. He has chaired or co-chaired many committees for the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and its National Research Council (NRC) as well as the World Climate Research Programme.

He has served on the NAS Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (BASC) since 2003 and led BASC as chair from 2009–2014.

He has extensive knowledge and experience working with the key government science agencies in Washington, D.C., and he has a comprehensive understanding of the federal funding environment.

He has also frequently testified before Congress regarding the value of weather, water, and climate research.

In his current position at the University of Maryland, Dr. Busalacchi leads an interdisciplinary research center encompassing meteorology, oceanography, geology, and geography to investigate how the land, oceans, and atmosphere react with and influence one another.

He has been involved in the activities of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) for many years. From 2008-2014 he chaired the Joint Scientific Committee that oversaw the WCRP. He previously was co-chair of the scientific steering group for its sub-program on Climate Variability and Predictability.

In 2016, Busalacchi was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. In 2014 he was elected as chair of the American Association for the Advancement of Science "Section W" on Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Sciences. That year he was also elected to UCAR’s Board of Trustees.

Busalacchi has received numerous other awards and honors. In 1991, he was the recipient of the prestigious Arthur S. Flemming Award, as one of five outstanding young scientists in the entire federal government. In 1995 he was selected as Alumnus of the Year at Florida State University, in 1997 he was the H. Burr Steinbach Visiting Scholar at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and in 1999 he was awarded the NASA/Goddard Excellence in Outreach Award and the Presidential Rank Meritorious Executive Award. He is a fellow of the American Meteorological Society, the American Geophysical Union, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2006, he was selected by the AMS to be the Walter Orr Roberts Interdisciplinary Science Lecturer.
